Prime Video has set Jan. 20, 2027 as the release date for "Bloodaxe," its new Viking drama from "Vikings" creator Michael Hirst, and premiered a fierce first trailer at New York Comic Con on Oct. 18.
The teaser debuted during a New York Comic Con panel attended by showrunners Michael Hirst and Horatio Hirst and cast members Xavier Molyneux, Jessica Madsen and Levi Miller. All eight episodes of Season 1 will premiere exclusively on the streamer.
What is 'Bloodaxe' about?
Season 1 follows the rise of Erik Bloodaxe (Molyneux), one of the most notable Norse raiders in history, and his wife Gunnhild (Madsen). The couple fights for the throne of Norway as rivalries, loyalties and betrayals tear the land apart. Other Scandinavian kings — and even an English king — are drawn into the chaos as the kingdom braces for war.
The Season 1 cast also includes Karlis Arnolds Avots, Rod Hallett, Alina Tomnikov, Sisse Marie, Rune Temte and Jesper Christensen.
How does it connect to 'Vikings'?
"Bloodaxe" shares a historical connection with Michael Hirst's "Vikings," which ran from 2013 to 2021. Its sequel series, "Vikings: Valhalla," ran for three seasons on Netflix from 2022 to 2024. The new series is set in the 10th century, slotting chronologically between Hirst's two previous television outings.
That lineage makes "Bloodaxe" a rare case of a franchise spanning two competing streamers: Hirst launched the saga on History and Netflix, and now continues it under Amazon's banner.
Who is making it?
Michael and Horatio Hirst executive produce and write the series. Additional executive producers include:
- Morgan O'Sullivan under his O'Sullivan Productions label
- Steve Stark under his Toluca Pictures label
- Arturo Interian
- John Weber
- Sheila Hockin
MGM Television produces.
Is a second season coming?
Yes. Amazon has already picked up "Bloodaxe" for a second season, which is currently in production in Ireland — a signal of the platform's confidence more than a year before the first episode streams.
With Hirst's track record of eight years of Norse storytelling across two networks, "Bloodaxe" positions Prime Video to reclaim the Viking genre when it arrives in January 2027.
