Andrew Garfield will receive the Maltin Modern Master Award at the 42nd Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Feb. 6, the festival announced. SBIFF dates its 42nd edition to Feb. 3-13.

Garfield will join film critic Leonard Maltin for an on-stage conversation. The festival says he will reflect on his decades-long career. The announcement gives no year, ticket details or further description of the event.

SBIFF also identifies Garfield’s upcoming performance in Luca Guadagnino’s “Artificial,” in which he plays OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The announcement gives no release date for the film and does not say whether SBIFF will screen it.

“Andrew Garfield has long since proven himself to critics and audiences alike,” Maltin said. “It’s no simple matter to balance a career between mainstream Hollywood movies and challenging director-driven projects, but he has done exactly that and done it well.”

That is an endorsement, not a selection record. The festival announcement does not identify the selection criteria, explain who chose Garfield or connect the award to one particular film.

SBIFF says the Modern Master Award was established in 1995 to honor an individual who enriched culture through work in film. It was renamed the Maltin Modern Master Award in 2015 for Leonard Maltin, the festival’s long-time moderator.

The festival lists a substantial roster of previous recipients:

  • Adam Sandler, Angelina Jolie, Jamie Lee Curtis, Nicole Kidman, Javier Bardem, Robert Downey Jr., Denzel Washington and Cate Blanchett.
  • George Clooney, Christopher Plummer, Christopher Nolan, James Cameron, Sean Penn, Clint Eastwood and Peter Jackson.

The names establish the award’s institutional history, but they do not explain Garfield’s selection. No jury citation, comparative statement or stated reason accompanies the announcement.

For Garfield’s career case, SBIFF cites:

  • Mel Gibson’s “Hacksaw Ridge.”
  • David Fincher’s “The Social Network.”
  • Martin Scorsese’s “Silence.”
  • Luca Guadagnino’s “After The Hunt.”
  • “The Amazing Spider-Man” films, in which Garfield played Peter Parker.
  • “Under the Banner of Heaven,” for which he earned an Emmy nomination.

SBIFF also records two Academy Award nominations, a Golden Globe win and a Tony Award win. These credits demonstrate breadth across directors, franchises and character roles. The announcement offers no ranking among them and no explanation of how the list informed the award decision.

What does the honor change for Garfield?

At present, the award adds a named institutional honor to his record. The announcement does not connect it to a new film role; “Artificial” appears in the festival’s announcement independently of the tribute.

For festival audiences, the concrete addition is the scheduled Feb. 6 conversation with Maltin. The source provides no ticket information, so it has not established how readers can attend.

The event’s value will depend on the specificity of Garfield and Maltin’s discussion. The festival has established the occasion; the conversation still has to establish its substance.
