Audrey Hobert has released a self-directed video for "Phoebe," more than a year after her debut album Who's the Clown. The clip shows the singer tossing a memoir manuscript titled The Story of My Life into a fire, drinking coffee before a tombstone reading "Hopes n Dreams," and fishing — where she reels in a hundred-dollar bill.
It's normal Hobert stuff. It's also no surprise she directed it herself, as she does with all of her videos.
What comes before 'Phoebe'?
Hobert recently marked the one-year anniversary of Who's the Clown with a special vinyl edition. "Phoebe" joins a run of video singles: "Silver Jubilee," "Sex and the City," "Bowling Alley," "Thirst Trap," "Wet Hair" and "Sue Me."
"Sue Me" is the one that changed things. The sleeper hit recently debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 (the magazine's flagship singles chart), giving Hobert her first entry there.
Where can you see her?
Hobert is currently on tour. Early next year she opens for Charli XCX.
Her frame for all of this is refreshing, if casually ambitious. "I remember having the active thought very early on that there are no rules," Hobert told Rolling Stone last year. "I have such an innate knowledge of pop music because I've been studying it without realizing it all my life."
What about that Tonight Show appearance?
Hobert also addressed her whimsical October 2025 appearance on The Tonight Show and its mixed reception. "I have noticed that some people think I'm doing a shtick or a character," she said. "That was me giving it my all."
Her reasoning had a certain logic. "I was like, 'I don't know if I'll ever do that again. You never know what's going to happen in this life. So if this is my shot, I'm just going to go up there and be naked… but also in jeans.'"
She paused on the phrase. "Naked in jeans. I love that. Yeah, naked in jeans."
A Hot 100 entry, a Charli XCX opening slot and a tour in progress — the "no rules" approach appears to be working. The "Phoebe" video suggests she intends to keep directing the results herself.
