Billy Bob Thornton will host and executive produce "Billy Bob Thornton Presents: The Mayflower," a three-part docudrama series streaming on Fox Nation from November 23 — one day before Thanksgiving, the holiday its subject helped spur.
The Oscar-winning writer and actor joins a growing roster of major creatives working with Fox Nation, a list that already includes Martin Scorsese, Kevin Costner and Kelsey Grammer.
What will the series cover?
The series traces the Pilgrims' Atlantic crossing aboard the Mayflower. It then follows the alliance forged between the English settlers and the Wampanoag people, and the conflict that ultimately pushed what were once colonies of Britain toward forming an American identity.
Fox Nation president Lauren Petterson framed the project in terms of Thornton's storytelling reach. "Billy Bob Thornton is a captivating storyteller with a unique ability to bring history to life," Petterson said in a statement. "'The Mayflower' offers a fresh and thought-provoking perspective on one of the most familiar chapters in American history, giving viewers a richer understanding of the people, conflicts and events that shaped our nation's beginnings."
Who did the production consult?
The development team consulted a range of historical resources and experts, including historians at Plimoth Patuxet Museums, where portions of the series were filmed. The production also drew on the work of historian Nathaniel Philbrick, author of "Mayflower: A Story of Courage, Community, and War."
Philbrick endorsed the project directly. "The voyage of the Mayflower set into motion what would become the United States," he said in a prepared statement. "Kudos to Billy Bob Thornton for helping to bring this vital story from America's past to life."
Who is making it?
AIRtime Projects and Terminal B TV produce the series. The executive producers are Billy Bob Thornton, Geyer Kosinski, Tom Forman, David Metzler and Jordan Rosenblum, alongside showrunner and executive producer John Ealer.
Thornton currently stars in the Paramount+ series "Landman." His film credits include "Bad Santa," "The Alamo," "Bandits" and "Monster's Ball." He wrote the script for, directed and starred in "Sling Blade."
What does this change for Fox Nation?
For the streaming service, the series extends a strategy of attaching established Hollywood names to prestige-leaning historical programming. For Thornton, it marks a move from acting and directing into documentary hosting and producing. The November 23 premiere positions the series squarely in the Thanksgiving window, when audiences are most receptive to the Mayflower story — and when the conversation around settler–Wampanoag relations is at its most visible.
