Blumhouse is developing a film adaptation of "Amanda the Adventurer," the indie horror video game from DreadXP and developer MANGLEDmaw Games. Jason Blum and Matthew "MatPat" Patrick announced the project on stage at the Blumfest panel at New York Comic Con on Friday.

The announcement doubles as the first move in a multi-project deal between Blumhouse and Patrick, the former host of the "Theory" channels on YouTube. Blum revealed the deal at the opening of the panel, which Patrick moderated. The two said they are currently in talks with potential writers and directors, with more details to follow.

Patrick will spearhead the "Amanda the Adventurer" film. Blum and Patrick Ewald, CEO of Epic Pictures, will produce alongside him.

What Is 'Amanda the Adventurer' About?

The game follows Riley Park, who inherits the house of her reclusive Aunt Kate after her death. According to the game's official description, Riley finds "a stack of VHS tapes next to an old TV set" in the attic.

The tapes contain episodes of an early-2000s children's cartoon the protagonist has never seen, apparently made locally and cheaply. It features "a little girl named Amanda and her loyal yet shy best friend, Wooly the Sheep."

The premise turns sinister as Riley watches. Per the description, "an uneasiness starts to settle in as Riley realizes that Amanda and Wooly seem to be communicating directly through the television set." Riley keeps watching despite a gnawing urge to stop: "It's almost as if Amanda needs something, and Riley becomes fascinated with finding out what that something may be."

Who Is MatPat?

Patrick built his following through the "Theory" family of YouTube channels. His credits beyond the platform include:

  • Hosting the reality competition show "The Runner," from executive producers Matt Damon and Ben Affleck
  • Voice-acting roles in a "Transformers" web series and Blumhouse's "Five Nights at Freddy's" film franchise
  • Co-producing the Tony-nominated Broadway play "Grey House"
  • Co-producing the West End musical "Your Lie," which opened in April

Patrick is represented by Dan Levitt of The.Team.

The "Amanda the Adventurer" deal signals how Blumhouse continues to draw on established horror-adjacent IP and internet-native talent, following the box-office success of its "Five Nights at Freddy's" franchise — a path Patrick already knows from the inside.
