Britney Spears has quietly released "She'll Never Be Me," a previously unreleased duet with Justin Timberlake, as a preview of the 25th-anniversary edition of her 2001 album "Britney," due November 6.

Spears and Timberlake, who were dating at the time of the recording, worked on the track with Bradley Daymond and Alex Greggs, the songwriting-production duo known as Riprock 'n' Alex G and longtime 'NSYNC collaborators.

The release arrived without fanfare. There was no announcement on Spears's website or social media accounts beyond a single reel on her Facebook page, and no press release from RCA, her longtime label.

Why the low-key rollout?

The muted approach tracks with Spears's stated position on her career. In 2024, she said she will "never return to the music industry." In January, she said she will never perform in the United States again. She effectively announced her retirement in 2024.

The Facebook post notes that "She'll Never Be Me" is one of five previously unreleased tracks on the anniversary edition. The others are:

  • "Am I a Sinner"
  • "When I Say So"
  • "My Big Secret"
  • a full version of "Right Now (Taste the Victory)," used in a 2002 Pepsi commercial

What does the release mean for Spears's catalog?

Although the songs are more than 25 years old, they are the first new recordings released by Spears since her 2023 collaboration with Will.I.Am, "Mind Your Business" — and even that track was assembled from older recordings.

Spears was released from a 13-year conservatorship in 2021, regaining full control over her personal life and finances. She has largely kept a low public profile since then, occasionally posting statements and videos of herself dancing that have made some observers concerned about her wellbeing.

In May, Spears pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol and avoided jail time. She was initially arrested on March 4 in Ventura County, California; the California Highway Patrol made the arrest around 9:30 p.m., and she was booked around 3 a.m. the next morning. Five weeks after the arrest, Spears voluntarily checked into a treatment center but checked out of the facility days before her arraignment.

The November 6 edition marks the first archival project to surface since Spears regained control of her affairs — and a test of how her catalog can be extended without her active participation in the industry she has left behind.
