NBC has hired Bruce Helford, the veteran showrunner of "The Conners," to take over "Newlyweds" — two weeks before the sitcom's Oct. 23 premiere. The move follows co-creator Gail Lerner's announcement on Oct. 9 that the network had fired her from the show she developed with Jamie Lee Curtis.
Helford arrives with a long track record in comedian-driven television. He created or co-created "The Drew Carey Show," "The Norm Show" starring Norm Macdonald and "George Lopez." He also wrote and executive produced the original run of "Roseanne," its 2018 revival and the 2018–2025 sequel series "The Conners." He is repped by UTA and Ziffren Brittenham.
The network has not publicly explained the change. What explanation exists comes from Lerner herself.
What did Lerner say about her firing?
Lerner broke the news herself, in an Instagram caption on Oct. 9. She wrote: "The reason I've been given is 'creative differences.' The cloudy part: I'm so sad to be separated from the most joyous TV experience of my life. The cast, crew, and writers are unparalleled. The silver lining: the first six episodes were made under my leadership, and I wouldn't change a thing."
Two details in that post stand out. First, NBC framed the split as routine "creative differences" — a phrase that explains little. Second, the first six episodes are already locked under Lerner's leadership. Whatever Helford does with the series will only become visible from episode seven onward.
What is 'Newlyweds' about?
Per the official description, "Newlyweds" is "a later-in-life love story about Jeanie (Téa Leoni), a free-spirited woman, and James (Tim Daly), a buttoned-up professor, who marry impetuously after a whirlwind courtship. James only has eyes for Jeanie, but quickly learns that loving her means learning to love her sprawling, eccentric world of friends and family and vice versa."
The cast also includes Jamie Lee Curtis, Emma Meisel, Ignacio Diaz-Silverio and Bill O'Neill.
Lerner keeps her executive producer credit alongside Helford; Curtis; Eric and Kim Tannenbaum and Jason Wang for the Tannenbaum Company; Scott Schwartz; and Lionsgate Television. Pam Fryman directed and executive produced the pilot. Universal Television is the studio.
What does this change for the series?
For viewers, nothing immediate: six Lerner-led episodes air as produced. The real test starts later. Helford's hire signals NBC wants a steadier, more conventional hand on a show whose pilot came from Fryman, the director behind "How I Met Your Mother" — though whether that means tonal recalibration or continuity will only be readable in the back half of the season.
