Central City Opera Unveils 2027 Season for 95th Festival

Central City Opera has announced its 2027 season, which marks the company's 95th festival season. The festival runs from June 26 through August 1, 2027, and comprises three productions.

The season opens with Puccini's "La Bohème," one of the most performed operas in the world. The work returns to the Central City Opera stage for the first time in 15 years.

The festival continues with Gilbert & Sullivan's "H.M.S. Pinafore." The comic operetta, a staple of the Victorian stage, comes back to Central City nearly 150 years after its 1878 premiere.

Peter Quilter's "End of the Rainbow," a play with music, closes the season. The work follows legendary entertainer Judy Garland through her fraught and electrifying run of concerts at "Talk of the Town."

In a statement, Adam Scurto, Managing Director of External Affairs, laid out the thinking behind the programming. "The variety is something audiences have come to love about the Central City Opera Festival. From tragic young love and sweeping music, to dry British humor, to an exploration of fame with one of the most famous icons of the 20th century, this festival has something for everyone."

The lineup pairs a core repertory title, "La Bohème," with a savoy operetta and a music-driven drama about one of the 20th century's most scrutinized performers. That mix tracks the pattern Scurto describes: the festival has built its identity on range rather than a single repertoire strand.

"La Bohème" carries the strongest claim on the announcement. The opera has not appeared on the Central City Opera stage since 2012, a 15-year gap that makes the 2027 production the season's most conspicuous repertory event. "H.M.S. Pinafore" brings the festival's comic register, arriving close to a century and a half after its London premiere.

"End of the Rainbow" extends the company's reach beyond opera into theatre with music. The play centers on Garland's late-career engagement at the London venue "Talk of the Town," a period the announcement characterizes as both fraught and electrifying, and frames fame itself as the season's third theme alongside young love and British comedy.

Cast and dates for the individual productions will be announced at a later date, according to the company.

With the 2027 announcement, Central City Opera confirms a summer structure its audience already knows: three productions across roughly five weeks in the historic mountain town, anchored by one returning repertory staple and flanked by contrasting genres.
