Chris Hansen Calls 'Primetime' "So Bizarre" After Finally Watching

Chris Hansen has finally watched "Primetime" — and he calls the film "so bizarre and so in-and-out of reality."

The former "To Catch a Predator" host delivered his verdict in a short clip filmed outside a theater. He promised a fuller reaction on his podcast and YouTube channel, "Have A Seat With Chris Hansen," at 7 p.m. ET on Friday.

"Obviously, I'm not objective because the character is, you know, me, but it was so detached from reality or anything I've experienced then or now doing the investigations," Hansen said. "I'm not sure what the point of it was."

The film stars Robert Pattinson as Hansen in 2006, the year "To Catch a Predator" moved from "Dateline NBC" to its own primetime block. A24, the film's distributor, labeled it "inspired by true events" rather than a biopic. Lance Oppenheim directed.

Hansen's viewing came after a public standoff with the studio. Speaking on Fox News' "Jesse Watters Primetime" in August, he said he walked out of A24's offices without seeing the film because of the legal agreement the company wanted him to sign.

"I've never seen anything quite like it," he said of the agreement.

He also criticized Pattinson's performance as "overly dramatic," while conceding that his family found it a "pretty good imitation."

Pattinson, for his part, has said he hoped Hansen would come around on the portrayal. "I would hope the amount of inspiration his character has given a lot of people for years is some kind of compliment," the actor said following Hansen's earlier comments.

"Primetime" opened in theaters this week. It made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where it drew buzz and a seven-minute ovation.

Whether Hansen's full-length review, due Friday evening, softens or sharpens his assessment remains to be seen — but the podcast episode is likely to fuel the conversation around one of A24's most talked-about fall releases.
