Programme

  1. Dave Grohl joined AC/DC on stage for 'Highway to Hell' at the final Power Up Tour show at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Friday.
  2. Foo Fighters opened the show as a surprise act; they had also opened AC/DC's September 8 St. Louis date in place of the Pretty Reckless.
  3. The Power Up Tour, supporting the 2020 LP Power Up, ran from May 2024 to Friday's finale; Brian Johnson has suggested it may be AC/DC's last tour.

AC/DC closed their two-year Power Up Tour on Friday night at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with an unannounced guest: Dave Grohl joined the band on stage for "Highway to Hell."

The cameo fulfilled what Grohl himself described as a "childhood dream." The Foo Fighters frontman was already in the building — his band served as the surprise opening act for the show.

The MetLife gig was originally scheduled for September 25, but a nor'easter along the East Coast pushed the date to Friday. The postponement made it the final date of AC/DC's Power Up tour, which began in May 2024 in support of their 2020 LP Power Up. When the show was rescheduled, organizers also announced that Foo Fighters would open.

AC/DC singer Brian Johnson introduced the surprise himself, telling the crowd: "Hey everybody, we got something to tell you. You better listen up close now. A very good friend of ours asked us today if he could come up and join us for 'Highway for Hell.' And we said, 'Yes Dave, you can.'" He added: "David Grohl. Music's brilliant, isn't it?"

The appearance was not Grohl's first on the tour. Foo Fighters also opened for AC/DC in St. Louis on September 8, filling in for the trek's usual opener, the Pretty Reckless.

During Foo Fighters' opening set at MetLife, Grohl told the audience what AC/DC has meant to him since childhood. "When I was 11 years old and I went to a midnight movie, and I saw the Let There Be Rock movie in the fucking movie theater, at 11 years old, I didn't know that rock n' roll could be like that. I didn't know that rock n' roll was sweat and blood and fucking tears and every ounce of energy you had," he said.

"I saw that movie, I was 11 years old, I said, 'I want to do that for the rest of my fucking life.' So here we are… I'm going to live my childhood dream again, tonight."

Whether the MetLIfe show marks the end of more than just the tour remains an open question. The band has revealed little about future plans, but Johnson has suggested the trek might be AC/DC's last. His parting words to the crowd at the conclusion of the show gave fans little certainty either way: "Good night, hope we'll see you again."
