Disney has renewed its supernatural young adult series "Coven Academy" for a second season, backed by hard numbers: 20.3 million hours watched globally on Disney+ and Hulu in the show's first three weeks.
Tim Federle created the series, which follows "three teenage witches and their dangerously charming warlock peers at an elite magic boarding school where power is currency, secrets are lethal and attraction is a liability," per the official logline. The premise continues: caught between ancient supernatural wars and forbidden love interests, the coven must decide how far they're willing to go to protect their city — and themselves. The cast includes Malina Pauli Weissman, Malachi Barton, Jordan Leftwich, Ora Duplass, Louis Thresher, Tiffani Thiessen and Devon Sawa.
How Season 1 rolled out
Season 1 runs 21 short "chapters." Nine of them premiered on Freeform on Oct. 1, and the rest dropped on Disney+ and Hulu the next day. The staggered release was itself a shift: Disney originally planned "Coven Academy" as the first young adult series to air on Disney Channel, then moved it to Freeform and streaming, where it sits alongside more mature content.
The show's distribution didn't stop at television. Disney also released the season's first chapter on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, where it drew more than 30 million views.
What do the ratings actually show?
The audience data explains why Disney moved fast on a renewal. According to Nielsen, "Coven Academy" was the most-watched streaming series among teens aged 12-17 through its premiere weekend. Among all viewers, it ranked in the top five when measured by views rather than hours watched — a distinction that favors shows with short episodes like this one's chapter format.
The co-viewing figures matter too. Nielsen's data shows half of viewers aged 12-17 and close to two-thirds of viewers aged 6-11 watched alongside an adult. That's the family-adjacent audience Disney's kids-and-family strategy targets, and it suggests the short-chapter structure works across age groups rather than boxing the show into a single demographic.
Who makes it
Federle executive produces alongside Darren Swimmer, Todd Slavkin, Amanda Row and Bronwyn North-Reist. The series comes from Federle's Chorus Boy Productions in association with Disney Kids & Family.
Where Season 2 goes
Federle has already sketched his thinking. "I don't want to tell another straight-up mom mystery again, but I think there is something fun to explore in what makes a mother and daughter so dangerous when they're together. And who would be most threatened by that?" he told Variety, in an interview offering an in-depth breakdown of his Season 2 ideas.
The comment signals the mother-daughter dynamic will carry into the new season, but with a different angle than the mystery framing of the first. With a renewal secured and a proven multi-platform rollout model in place, Season 2 has both the audience data and the creative direction to build on.
