Edgar Wright says the upcoming AI-upscaled Blu-ray of Spaced was "not authorized by anyone involved in making the show." The director learned of the re-release only when a fan asked him about it on X.

The set, titled Spaced: The Complete Series, is due out in February 2027 from All3Media, which became part of Banijay Entertainment after their merger completed earlier this year. Its marketing copy claims a "global first" upgrade: "a brand new 4K master using a combination of traditional and proprietary tools in a multi-step process of non-commercial and algorithmic corrections that are additionally enhanced frame by frame by a manual operator — guaranteeing the most state-of-the-art upconversion possible."

In plain terms, that's AI-assisted upscaling — software stretching a standard-definition picture to 4K resolution, with a human touching up individual frames.

What did Wright actually say?

Asked about his involvement, Wright replied: "Finding out about this for the first time is… disheartening. I had been pushing to do a Blu-Ray of SPACED for years, so to find out that someone just went ahead without our involvement is…. a bummer. Not authorized by anyone involved in making the show."

Another fan asked how he could not know about it. Wright answered: "It's a Channel 4 show. We were all very involved in the previous editions, but not this one. Don't know. Finding out." That points to the mechanism here: the rights sit with the broadcaster's commercial chain, not the creators, so All3Media can license a re-release without consulting them.

Why the show matters

Spaced ran on Channel 4 from 1999 to 2001, created by its stars Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes. The surrealist slacker sitcom followed two 20-something Londoners (Pegg and Hynes) pretending to be a couple to rent a cheap room in a shared house — alongside a frustrated painter, an army fanatic and a chain-smoking landlady. It built its reputation on rapid-fire editing and pop-culture hallucinations, and critics still regularly rank it among the U.K.'s best comedies.

Wright directed all 14 episodes. The series launched a creative partnership that continued into film with Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World's End, all starring Pegg and Nick Frost, who also appeared in the show.

The creators weren't absent from earlier home releases. A 2008 DVD edition featured guest appearances from Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Bill Hader, Diablo Cody, Matt Stone and Patton Oswalt — a measure of the show's international fanbase.

What does this change for catalog titles?

The timing stings for Wright in another way: the Blu-ray news arrives months after false online rumors of a Spaced reboot. Together, the episodes show how little control original creators can retain over legacy titles once rights consolidate — Banijay's absorption of All3Media is exactly the kind of deal that shifts such decisions.

It's also a test case for AI upscaling (algorithmic resolution enhancement of old footage) on beloved catalog shows. If the February 2027 release sells without creator sign-off, expect more rights holders to follow. Variety has reached out to All3Media for comment.
