Mezzo-soprano Fiona Janes will publish "La Stupenda, the Voice of the Century," an illustrated book on Dame Joan Sutherland, in hardback on Oct. 27. The release lands on the 100th anniversary of the Australian soprano's birth.

The timing is the point. A centenary gives publishers and foundations a natural hook, and this one doubles as an institutional gesture: Janes is the CEO and artistic director of the Joan Sutherland & Richard Bonynge Foundation, the body that guards the singer's legacy.

What's inside the book?

According to the announcement, the book covers Sutherland's career on the world's major stages. It also examines her decades-long partnership with her husband, conductor Richard Bonynge — specifically their shared work on the bel canto repertoire (the early-19th-century Italian school of florid, ornamental singing that Sutherland helped revive) and their recordings together.

Beyond the narrative, the volume includes:

  • rare photographs
  • archival material
  • personal insights from the author

The physical object matters here too. It's published as a collector's edition with a slipcase, which signals the publisher is aiming at completists and institutions rather than the casual reader.

Who is Fiona Janes?

Janes comes to the project with credentials on both sides of the legacy. Beyond leading the Foundation, she founded three competitions for young singers: the JSRB Bel Canto Award, the Sydney International Song Prize and the Elizabeth Connell Prize.

She has form as a writer on this subject. Janes was a contributing writer on "Chalet Monet: Inside the Home of Dame Joan Sutherland & Richard Bonynge" and has written liner and editorial material for Decca, the label central to Sutherland's recording career.

What does this change for Sutherland's legacy?

For listeners, the book offers a single illustrated record tying together the stage career, the Bonynge partnership and the recordings — material previously scattered across album booklets and memoirs. For the Foundation, it consolidates a centenary program that already includes the awards Janes founded, keeping Sutherland's name in circulation for a new generation of singers and audiences.

The Oct. 27 hardback release will show whether a slipcased tribute can reach beyond the opera faithful in a crowded centenary season.
