Five films — "All of a Sudden," "Clarissa," "La Gradiva," "The Invite" and "Tender Loving Care" — lead the nominations for the 36th edition of The Gothams with four nods each. The Gotham Film & Media Institute announced the slate, singling out 42 feature films and 25 performances across 11 award categories.

"Clarissa" and "The Invite" also landed best feature nominations, alongside "Club Kid," "The Debut," "Dreams in Nightmares," "Josephine," "Mouse," "Paper Tiger," "Primetime," "Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma" and "Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother." That makes 11 contenders in the top category — an unusually wide field.

Jeffrey Sharp, executive director of The Gotham Film & Media Institute, announced the nominations. "It's a pleasure to announce this year's nominees. It has been a remarkable year for film, with audiences turning out in theaters for bold, distinctive work from first-time filmmakers and established artists alike," Sharp said. "This year's nominations, alongside our Tributes and the return of the Audience Award, reflect that abundance and celebrate the creative community that has been at the heart of The Gothams for more than three decades."

The best director category pits Ryusuke Hamaguchi ("All of a Sudden"), Sandra Wollner ("Everytime"), Andrey Zvyagintsev ("Minotaur"), Jane Schoenbrun ("Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma") and Mike Leigh ("Tender Loving Care") against one another. All five directed films also nominated elsewhere in the field.
