Lululemon will launch a 22-piece collaboration with Copenhagen-based label Ganni on Oct. 15, inspired by the dance films of the 1980s and fronted by "Flashdance" star Jennifer Beals and singer-dancer METTE.
The collection, titled the Ganni x Lululemon lineup, brings leopard prints, ruffled trims and bold colors to Lululemon's technical performance wear. It includes leg warmers, boleros and headbands alongside reworked versions of Lululemon staples such as the Define Jacket. Several pieces use Lululemon's proprietary Nulu and Softstreme fabrics, which the brand designs for comfort and flexibility.
Who fronts the campaign?
Jennifer Beals — who played aspiring dancer Alex Owens in the 1983 classic "Flashdance" — appears with METTE in the collection's "Joy Is a Power Move" campaign. Shot in a dance studio, the accompanying short film shows the two performers channeling the energy of '80s dance movies and blurring the lines between rehearsal and performance.
"What an honor it is to be part of a campaign that promotes connecting to joy through movement as an integral part of life," Beals said in a statement. "As a longtime Lululemon and Ganni customer, I am so thrilled to be invited to be a small part of this incredible collaboration."
METTE, who has worked as both a dancer and a recording artist, called sharing the screen with Beals a full-circle moment. "Getting to know and admire Jennifer and share a dance with her to my music felt like a piece of that dream coming to life," she said.
Why 1980s dance films?
Ganni creative director Ditte Reffstrup said the films were the natural starting point for the collaboration.
"80s dance movies have been part of my life since I was a child, so they felt like such a natural starting point," Reffstrup said. "I've always been drawn to the energy, determination and sense of freedom in those films, and the way dance becomes such a powerful form of self-expression."
She described the design process as a fusion of three worlds: "For the collection, we brought that 80s dance energy into the colours and details, then mixed it with Ganni's signatures like leopard and frills, and Lululemon's world of movement."
Where and when can shoppers buy it?
The Ganni x Lululemon collection becomes available Oct. 15 at lululemon.com and ganni.com, and at select retail stores across North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific.
The collaboration marks one of Lululemon's most fashion-forward pairings to date — and a test of whether '80s aerobics-class styling can translate into global demand for performance wear.
