The first trailer for Greta Gerwig's Narnia: The Magician's Nephew has arrived, scored to Led Zeppelin and starring Meryl Streep, Daniel Craig and Carey Mulligan. Netflix has set a theatrical launch in IMAX and global cinemas on February 12, 2027, with the streaming debut following on April 2, 2027. That seven-week theatrical window runs longer than some legacy studios allow before moving their films to subscription platforms.
The adaptation of C.S. Lewis's novel follows Gerwig's studio blockbuster Barbie. Its cast also includes Emma Mackey, Ciarán Hinds, David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell. Seamus McGarvey, the cinematographer behind Nocturnal Animals, Anna Karenina and Die My Love, shot the film. The trailer and poster landed this week.
What does Gerwig say about the film?
The director traced the project back to her childhood reading of the book. "I was a child when I first read The Magician's Nephew, and I fell in love with the gorgeously improbable but completely brilliant concept of a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life," Gerwig said.
She connected that memory directly to her filmmaking career. "I didn't know that I would grow up to make films, but a universe built out of music is an idea that always lived in my heart," she said. "It is the honor of a lifetime to be asked to imagine it into being."
Gerwig credits Lewis with shaping her sense of wonder. "Because of C. S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia, I believed in magic and hidden worlds and adventure," she said. "I believed that anywhere could be enchanted and that anyone could be swept up into an epic. That wonder and awe was available to everyone, even ordinary people like me…It transformed me."
What does this change for Netflix's release strategy?
The dates matter. Netflix, a company built on streaming, is giving Gerwig's film a genuine theatrical run in IMAX and global theaters before it reaches subscribers. The February 12, 2027 IMAX start and the April 2, 2027 streaming debut place The Magician's Nephew among the platform's most theatrically positioned titles — a window some traditional studios no longer match before moving films to their own subscription services.
For audiences, the sequence is simple. Cinemas first, on February 12, 2027. Home screens seven weeks later.
The trailer itself signals tone as much as plot. A Led Zeppelin score over Lewis's creation myth suggests Gerwig intends something bolder than a reverent pageant, an approach consistent with her stated fascination with a world sung into being. Whether that gamble carries a century-old property to a new generation will become clear when the lion sings in February 2027.
