Guided by Voices will release their 44th studio album, Speculation and Gossip, on January 22 via the band's own Rockathon Records. Frontman Robert Pollard announced the record while capping a year that included his largest-ever exhibition of collages, and he's promising more surprises for 2027.

The album's origin story involves an unlikely fixation. While writing the record, Pollard became obsessed with Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

"[I watched it] over and over," Pollard says. "I've almost learned the dialog like Rocky Horror Picture Show."

That cinematic loop wasn't the only influence. Pollard has also been immersed in surrealism and dada — fitting territory for a songwriter and visual artist who bends words and images through hallucinatory lyrics and collages that blend physical and meta realms.

What does the first single sound like?

The lead track, "Designed for Use," is a barreling, muscled rock song built on an odd foundation: mundane packaging copy. Pollard turns the throwaway language of product design into a personal motto — he was designed to be a musician, to play "in most stereophonic atmospheres." It's a typically Pollard move, finding poetry where nobody bothered to look.

How was this album recorded differently?

The last Guided by Voices album, Crawlspace of the Pantheon, was cut in the studio with the full band playing together. For album number 44, the group reversed course and returned to remote recording (each member working separately, then combining parts).

"We went back to doing things remotely with each individual coming up with his own approach to sound, fidelity and instrumentation instead of playing all together," Pollard says.

He had specific goals for the change. "I wanted more audible separation of the instruments and overall I was after more diversity in song structures, musical styles and lyrical content," he says. "I also wanted it to be much brighter, less heavy in overall tone than Crawlspace. On this one I just gave them genre references. Post punk, pop, prog, psych or combinations."

In practice, that means the band members received stylistic directions rather than full-band arrangements — a looser method that lets each player shape his own sonic footprint on the record.

What's next for Pollard?

The collage work runs parallel to everything else. "I work on collages everyday. It's an addiction," Pollard says. His largest-ever collage show marked a high point of the past year, and the visual practice continues to feed the same surrealist instincts that drive his lyrics.

There are also unrevealed plans. "[There's] special releases in the works for 2027 but I can't divulge them yet," he says.

What does this change for listeners? A January 22 release date means Speculation and Gossip lands as Guided by Voices' opening statement for 2027 — a brighter, more stylistically scattered record than its predecessor, delivered at the pace of a band now 44 albums deep and still chasing new structures.
