Inde Navarrette used her first "Saturday Night Live" monologue to take a swipe at Shane Gillis, joking that she works out in her "little whore outfit" to prepare for Marvel's new "X-Men" movie.
The 25-year-old star of the year's breakout horror hit "Obsession" made her hosting debut at Studio 8H on Halloween night. It followed a Trump-centric cold open that featured the return of Tom Hanks' David S. Pumpkins. A horror actress hosting on Halloween is the kind of booking that writes itself, and Navarrette proved more than up for the occasion — unlike, as the evening's subtext made clear, a certain stand-up comedian.
What did the monologue cover?
Navarrette opened with her most famous role. "You probably know me from the movie 'Obsession,'" she said. "And a lot of people ask me if I'm anything like my character Nikki and I'm like, 'No… no, no, don't do that!'" She slid into Nikki's cadence, then insisted the resemblance ends on set.
"But the thing is, is I'm nothing like my character in 'Obsession,'" she continued. "Like, my boyfriend is here tonight to support me and we have such a chill relationship, right?"
The camera cut to her boyfriend, Nick Aiello, seated in the crowd — bound and gagged to a chair. A horror star's gag, in both senses, executed on cue.
How did she hit back at Shane Gillis?
The sharpest turn targeted Gillis, whose own "SNL" monologue earlier this month drew criticism for a joke about how women dress like "whores" at the gym in "neon, like, artificial bait"-colored shorts. Critics called the bit lame and lazy. Navarrette apparently agreed.
"I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm going to be in a Marvel movie," she announced, confirming she will play Rogue in the new "X-Men" film. "And I know it's really important for Marvel that you get really fit, so I've been working out a lot, so every morning I put on my little whore outfit and I hit the gym."
The line repurposed Gillis' own vocabulary into a punchline at his expense. Where his version targeted women generally, hers targeted the joke itself. Economy of retaliation, Studio 8H edition.
Why the timing mattered?
Navarrette arrives at 30 Rockefeller Plaza as the star of "Obsession" and, per the internet's apparent fixation, the moment's most-watched young actress. Halloween night gave the booking its symmetry: breakout horror star, spooky slot, first monologue.
The Gillis callback turned a debut appearance into a statement. Navarrette will next appear as Rogue in Marvel's "X-Men" movie, and if her monologue is any measure, she intends to control her own punchlines on the way there.
