Jamie Dornan will play a young Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, according to an L’Officiel interview translated by Slash Film. L’Officiel says Andy Serkis will direct and star in the standalone film (a separate story, not a trilogy chapter). It is Serkis’s first main-director turn in the franchise.
L’Officiel’s account gives the inheritance plainly. Viggo Mortensen famously played Aragorn in the original LOTR trilogy. The new film goes earlier.
Before his rise to fame as Aragorn, heir to the throne of Gondor, the hero is a lonely hunter known as Strider. Dornan described the assignment as playing a younger version in a prequel (a story set before the earlier films).
Dornan said the role brings pressure:
“There’s pressure when you’re trying to follow in those footsteps. I’ve been asked to play a super iconic role, and I’ll do my best.”
“But for me, Aragorn will always be just Viggo. His performance is one of my all-time favorites, and I feel honored to try to recapture at least some of the energy he originally brought to the character. There’s no part of me that’s trying to outdo him.”
His answer draws a useful line, refusing an easy contest while acknowledging that Mortensen’s performance now sets expectations for every actor who follows him in the role. He is picking up a crown already tailored for Mortensen. The film must now make that modesty visible.
What does the story follow?
L’Officiel’s account says the film follows Gollum’s perspective, with Gandalf sending young Aragorn to find the corrupted hobbit at the center of the prequel story. Before his rise to fame as Aragorn, heir to the throne of Gondor, the hero is a lonely hunter known as Strider.
Who returns to Middle-Earth?
According to L’Officiel, Serkis supplied the voice and motion capture (recording performance data to animate a digital character) for the CGI (computer-generated imagery) hobbit in the original trilogy. He also worked as second unit director (overseeing action and location work outside the main unit’s schedule) on Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy.
L’Officiel also lists Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle and Venom: Let There Be Carnage among films Serkis has directed and identifies this project as his first main-director turn in the franchise.
L’Officiel’s cast list combines three returning franchise performers with four newcomers:
- Andy Serkis — director and star, returning to Middle-Earth.
- Ian McKellen — Gandalf.
- Elijah Wood — Frodo.
- Kate Winslet, Leo Woodall, Lee Pace and Anya Taylor-Joy — newcomers.
The next test is whether The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum can make Strider a character audiences can distinguish from the established Aragorn while preserving the legacy Dornan says he wants to honor.
