Jane Elliot is staying on General Hospital. A source at the ABC soap confirms to Soap Opera Digest that Tracy Quartermaine's exit from Port Charles, announced in the November 5 episode, is only a temporary story absence while Elliot takes her annual vacation and spends time with family. The actress is already back at the studio filming new episodes and will reappear on screen in a matter of weeks.

The genre's oldest lesson: when a soap character leaves town, check the actor's contract before the obituary.

Why did Tracy leave Port Charles?

On screen, Tracy explained she is flying to Thailand to rescue her son Dillon, who has been arrested there. The twist was telegraphed by head writers Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten in their 2026 fall preview interview with TV Insider: "Tracy asks Gio and Emma to help hold down the fort when she goes out of town to assist a family member in trouble."

Before departing, Tracy handled her family's affairs like a proper Quartermaine. She asked her nephew Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) to keep an eye on everyone, and he promised to do so. Her main worry: granddaughter Brook Lynn (Amanda Setton), whose recent adoption of baby Phoebe faces a legal challenge from Jude Jacks (Wil Traval).

Tracy then summoned Gio (Giovanni Mazza) and Emma (Braedyn Bruner) to the mansion, asking Gio to support Brook Lynn — his mom — in her absence. Both readily agreed.

Is this Tracy's first exit in recent years?

No. Viewers may recall that Tracy also left town at this time last year, in the wake of the ordeal involving Monica's (Leslie Charleson) surprise sister, Ronnie Bard (Erika Slezak). Ronnie had conspired with Martin Gray (Michael E. Knight) to fake Monica's will in a scheme to put the Quartermaine mansion in Drew Cain's (Cameron Mathison) hands. When the ploy was foiled, Tracy decamped to France for an extended spa vacation. She returned to Port Charles on December 15.

Has Jane Elliot left the show before?

Yes, once for real. The Daytime Emmy winner debuted as Tracy in 1978 and initially retired from the show in 2017. After several short-term comebacks, she returned full-time in April 2023.

"I'm a failed retiree," Elliot joked to Woman's World last year. When she realized she wanted to resume playing Tracy, she said, "I luckily had a wonderful boss [Executive Producer Frank Valentini] who kept a place at the table for me."

Elliot's annual autumn absences are now a fixture of the show's rhythm, and last year's gap closed within roughly a month and a half. If history repeats, Tracy will be back in the Quartermaine living room well before the year is out — and Brook Lynn's custody fight will likely still be waiting for her.
