Jennifer Lawrence Rules Out Ever Returning to X-Men's Mystique

Jennifer Lawrence, who played Mystique four times from 2011 to 2019, told Allure she would never return to the body paint: "Never say never, but absolutely f—ing not."

Programme

  1. Jennifer Lawrence played Mystique in four X-Men films between 2011 and 2019.
  2. Her Mystique makeup for 'X-Men: First Class' took eight hours per session.
  3. She told Allure: 'Never say never, but absolutely f—ing not' to prosthetic work again.
  4. Her screen test required dyeing her hair four colors in one day, permanently damaging it.
  5. Her stunt double Renee Moneymaker also doubled her as Katniss.

Jennifer Lawrence played the "X-Men" mutant Mystique four times between 2011 and 2019, and she has now ruled out a return in the bluntest terms available to her. Asked by Allure magazine whether she would consider heavy prosthetic work like Mystique again, the Oscar winner shot back: "Never say never, but absolutely f—ing not."

The comment came in a video interview with Allure, in which Lawrence was asked to weigh the best and worst parts of playing the blue-skinned shapeshifter. Her verdict was unambiguous on both counts.

"My favorite part of playing Mystique was the stunts," Lawrence said. "It was so fun to train in that way and learn how to move. I had the same stunt double, Renee Moneymaker, who was Katniss. She is one of my best friends, so that was great. My least favorite part was most certainly the paint."

What did the transformation actually involve?

In a separate appearance on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast, Lawrence filled in the numbers behind her aversion. For "X-Men: First Class" — her 2011 debut as the character — the process ran to eight hours in the makeup chair, every single time.

"For 'First Class,' it was all body paint and glue. It was eight hours every time and ticklish," she said. "You've had air brushing, right? Imagine two tiny, cold, compressing air brushes all over your body. I am a hero. No one will understand what I went through."

The Allure interview elaborated on the physical toll. Lawrence described air brushing as "very cold" and noted she is ticklish. She also drew a harder conclusion about the production schedule itself: "I learned how little sleep I can operate on and what can happen to the human mind when you've actually reached your breaking point. And patience!"

The damage began before she even won the role. For her Mystique screen test, Lawrence had to dye her hair several different colors in a single day — red, brown, black and blonde. The dye permanently damaged her hair.

What does this change for the franchise?

Practically, not much in the near term. Marvel has given no public indication that a Lawrence-led Mystique project was on any slate, and her four-film run — beginning with "X-Men: First Class" in 2011 and ending in 2019 — concluded with the character's arc effectively closed. What her statements do close off is the possibility that a legacy-casting revival could lure her back with the promise of the iconic look.

The remarks also carry weight beyond the "X-Men" franchise. Lawrence, who won her Academy Award for "Silver Linings Playbook," is signaling that extreme makeup- and prosthetics-driven transformations are, in all likelihood, behind her. Directors planning elaborate physical transformations for future projects now know the cost calculus she applies to them: eight-hour chair sessions, cold compressing air brushes, chronic sleep deprivation and permanent hair damage.

Her standard, as stated to Allure, leaves one rhetorical loophole — "never say never" — followed immediately by a four-word answer that closes it. Given that the toll she describes ran from a single screen test to four films, the burden of proof now sits with anyone hoping to persuade her otherwise.
