John Travolta will receive a lifetime achievement award at the 44th Torino Film Festival, running in Turin from Nov. 24 to Dec. 2.

The festival will also screen Travolta's directorial debut, "Propeller One-Way Night Coach," marking the film's second international festival outing. The picture premiered out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

What does the honor recognize?

The Torino Film Festival, Italy's preeminent event for young directors and indie cinema, credited Travolta with a filmography that spans much of recent Hollywood history. In a statement, the festival listed the titles behind that reputation: "from 'Saturday Night Fever' to 'Grease,' 'Urban Cowboy,' 'Pulp Fiction,' 'Get Shorty,' 'Face/Off,' and 'Hairspray.'"

That run covers five decades of American cinema. It stretches from the 1977 disco landmark "Saturday Night Fever" through the 1994 comeback "Pulp Fiction" to the 2007 musical "Hairspray."

Artistic director Giulio Base, now heading his third edition of the festival, framed the award in personal terms.

"Thanks to his charisma, the characters he has played have come off the silver screen and revolutionized our habits, our gestures, our hairstyles, the way we walk," Base said. "He has portrayed the restlessness and desires of entire generations, spanning eras and genres with the power of a champion. For decades, the talent of the performer and the greatness of the myth have coexisted in him."

In plain words: the festival is honoring an actor whose roles shaped popular culture well beyond the box office.

What is the film about?

"Propeller One-Way Night Coach" adapts Travolta's own children's book, published in 1997. The film has been streaming on Apple TV since May 29.

The official logline sets the story in the golden age of aviation. A young airplane enthusiast named Jeff and his mother set off on a one-way cross-country odyssey to Hollywood, turning a simple flight into "the trip of a lifetime."

The journey unfolds through airline meals, charming flight attendants, unexpected stopovers, larger-than-life passengers and a glimpse at first class — moments the logline calls "both magical and unexpected," which chart the course for the boy's future.

Why Turin matters for the premiere

The Torino Film Festival has built its identity around emerging directors and independent cinema rather than studio showcases. That makes Travolta's debut — a personal, literary adaptation nearly three decades in the making — a natural fit for its program.

The Turin screening follows the film's out-of-competition Cannes premiere by roughly six months, giving European audiences a second festival window for a project Travolta first conceived as an author in 1997.

The Nov. 24–Dec. 2 dates give the festival the final word on Travolta's year: an award for a half-century career, paired with the widest European showcase yet for his first film as director.
