Cappu Films says A Grim Life will begin shooting at Los Angeles’ Cecil Hotel in January 2027. The Hong Kong sales company unveiled the supernatural thriller at TIFFCOM, the Tokyo International Film Festival’s film market, where it picked up international sales.

Cappu Films first presented the project to buyers in Busan. The company says those conversations continue before cameras roll. Janice Woo of Cappu Films said the Cecil Hotel and the lost film give the project an immediately compelling premise, “while Tom’s desperation gives the story its emotional center.”

Woo added: “Following our work with Francesco on ‘Starbright,’ we’re pleased to continue the relationship with a project that brings together a distinctive atmosphere and an experienced cast.”

Who is caught in Tom’s unfinished script?

Cappu Films credits Francesco Lucente as writer, director and producer. Its cast announcement places Mazzello as Tom, a filmmaker down on his luck who pays bills by scrubbing toilets and cannot stop reworking the one script he has.

A friend points Tom toward “Böse,” a lost silent picture from 1931. His search for an artistic breakthrough draws him toward a dark secret.

Cappu Films’ cast announcement includes Max Beesley as producer Joe and Wes Studi as Nic. Beesley’s credits include “Jack Ryan,” while Studi’s include “Avatar: Fire and Ash.”

Other cast members include Carl Lumbly as Henry and Arnetia Walker as Chelsea. Their listed credits are “Captain America: Brave New World” and “Bookie,” respectively. Mazzello’s credits include “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Jurassic Park” and “The Pacific.” Studi received an Academy Honorary Award in 2019.

“‘A Grim Life’ is a deeply personal project for me, one that explores the darker side of ambition, obsession, and the sacrifices we make in pursuit of our dreams,” Lucente said. “The Cecil Hotel provides an extraordinary and haunting backdrop for a story where the boundaries between reality and the supernatural begin to disappear.”

How does the Cecil Hotel carry the horror?

Cappu Films says the building itself does much of the work. The film draws its scares from the hotel’s hallways and concealed rooms. Sound and shadow tighten the dread. Tom’s deepening isolation adds to it.

The project’s schedule runs like a metronome, with pre-production in December 2026, a January 2027 shoot and delivery penciled for July 2027 under the current plan.

What does Cappu Films bring to the project?

Cappu Films notes that Lucente previously directed the drama “Badland” and the fantasy “Starbright.” The latter starred Ted Levine, John Rhys-Davies and Diego Boneta. It also established Cappu’s earlier collaboration with the director.

The sales company’s slate includes another Lucente fantasy, “Sinbad,” alongside the action titles “Lion Fist” and “Red Bird.” The company’s catalog spans horror, fantasy, action and arthouse films, plus television series and library titles drawn from the Golden Era of Hong Kong cinema.

The immediate test is whether Cappu’s Busan and Tokyo interest becomes a production at the Cecil. January 2027 will show whether the hotel’s architecture can carry Tom’s stalled career and the film’s supernatural premise. The building will have to work harder than the pitch.
