Kid Cudi announced this week that he will write, direct and star in JEAN, a biopic of the late artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, with production set to begin next year. The American rapper broke the news on Instagram, calling the film a "love letter to Jean, the 80s and NY city."

Cudi will portray Basquiat himself. He said the late artist has served as an inspiration throughout his career, and that it will be the "biggest honor to tell his story in a way we haven't seen before."

The announcement came with visual proof of intent. Cudi posted a mockup promotional poster alongside several black-and-white photographs of himself as Basquiat, shot in a large studio.

"This one im so proud of and excited about," Cudi wrote in the caption. "To write a film about someone who existed was a challenge, but it was a welcomed one. A lot of research, books, talks with people that knew him."

The quote is reproduced verbatim, typos and all. It is the voice of a musician stepping into a director's chair for the first time.

What does this change for Kid Cudi's career?

The Basquiat project follows Cudi's recent, deliberate move into the visual arts. The multi-hyphenate debuted his painting practice under the name Scotty Ramon in a group presentation at Art Cologne 2025.

In January, he held his inaugural solo exhibition, Echoes of the Past, at the Paris location of the gallery Ruttkowski;68. He has also shared his paintings on Instagram, including a work titled "WHEN THE LIGHT DIES."

The trajectory is now explicit: painter, subject, auteur. Cudi is not simply acting in a film about an artist. He is building a body of work around art itself, then claiming the director's seat to tell the story of the artist who inspired him most.

Why Basquiat, and why now?

Basquiat died in 1988 at 27. His life has already reached screens, most famously in Julian Schnabel's 1996 biopic with Jeffrey Wright. Cudi's promise to tell the story "in a way we haven't seen before" sets a high bar against that lineage.

His preparation, by his own account, was archival rather than performative. Books, research and conversations with people who knew Basquiat personally preceded the announcement. That method signals seriousness, though the proof will arrive only on screen.

Production begins next year. Until then, the black-and-white studio photographs of Cudi in character are the only glimpse of JEAN the public holds.
