LaKeith Stanfield exits ‘Molepeople’; Ben Wheatley directs
‘Molepeople’ keeps its Aug. 27, 2027 release date as Ben Wheatley replaces Rob Savage and LaKeith Stanfield exits, leaving casting and creative details undisclosed.

Programme
- ‘Molepeople’ is scheduled for theatrical release on Aug. 27, 2027.
- Ben Wheatley replaced Rob Savage as director.
- Rob Savage departed over scheduling conflicts and will remain an executive producer.
- LaKeith Stanfield exited without a stated reason or named replacement.
- Wheatley’s ‘Kill List’ earned six British Independent Film Award nominations, including best director and best screenplay.
‘Molepeople’ remains scheduled for an Aug. 27, 2027 theatrical release, with Ben Wheatley directing after Rob Savage and LaKeith Stanfield left the production. The current credits from Paramount Primal and Blumhouse Atomic Monster list Wheatley as director; the two companies co-finance and co-produce the film.
According to the production update from Paramount Primal and Blumhouse Atomic Monster, Savage, whose credits include The Boogeyman and Other Mommy, departed because of scheduling conflicts. Stanfield, previously announced as a star, has also exited. The update gives no reason for Stanfield’s departure and names no replacement.
That leaves the film without its announced director and star while retaining its release date.
The film was announced earlier this month during Blumhouse Atomic Monster’s New York Comic-Con presentation. Nathan Elston wrote the script. Its synopsis follows a man descending into the abandoned tunnels beneath New York City, where he discovers a “twisted society lurking beneath the streets.” No further story details accompany that description.
Paramount handles worldwide distribution. The producer credits name Jason Blum, Blumhouse Atomic Monster’s chief; Paramount Primal heads J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules; and James Harris. Savage will remain an executive producer alongside Ryan Turek, Tracy Rosenblum and Elston.
Keeping Savage on the project preserves some continuity, but not the directing role. The production information offers no evidence that he will shape Wheatley’s approach, and no comment from Wheatley appears in the update.
What does the director change mean for ‘Molepeople’?
For now, it changes who controls the film’s staging, tone and performance, not its release plan. Paramount still distributes worldwide, the two companies still co-finance and co-produce the film, and Aug. 27, 2027 remains the announced date. No replacement performer, script revision or change to the premise has been disclosed.
That makes Wheatley’s appointment the clearest sign of the project’s new direction. It does not resolve the casting gap left by Stanfield, whose departure carries no stated explanation.
For audiences, the practical answer is narrow but clear: the date remains, while the announced star and director have changed. Casting and further production detail will determine what kind of film eventually reaches the screen.
Wheatley has a record spanning independent films and studio franchises, although those credits do not guarantee a fit with this particular subterranean horror premise. The British filmmaker made his feature debut in 2009 with Down Terrace. His 2011 film Kill List earned six British Independent Film Award nominations, including best director and best screenplay.
His most recent film, the action thriller Normal, starred Bob Odenkirk and was written by John Wick creator Derek Kolstad. Normal premiered at TIFF’s Midnight Madness program ahead of an April 2026 theatrical release.
His credits since then include:
- High-Rise, starring Tom Hiddleston;
- Free Fire, executive produced by Martin Scorsese;
- the experimental feature Bulk;
- Warner Bros.’ Meg 2: The Trench, starring Jason Statham;
- Netflix’s Rebecca.
Wheatley is represented by WME, Independent Talent Group, and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole. The breadth of his credits establishes range, not a guaranteed fit with this story. The production information does not say whether Wheatley intends to retain Elston’s script or how he plans to realize the tunnels.
Until the first casting and production announcement under Wheatley, ‘Molepeople’ will have a date, a director and continuing producers, but no named replacement for Stanfield, no stated reason for his exit and no explanation for Wheatley’s selection.
