Law Roach, the stylist who dresses Zendaya, Kim Kardashian and Celine Dion, says he is "absolutely" ready to try acting. He made the declaration Thursday night on the red carpet of the InStyle Imagemaker Awards, where he was an honoree.
"When a director sees something for me," Roach said. "I want to try everything. If I'm terrible at it, at least I tried."
That's the quote. It carries the voice, so it stays verbatim.
What's the actual screen record?
Roach is not starting from zero. He has already played himself in two productions: "The Devil Wears Prada 2" and the Kate Hudson Netflix sitcom "Running Point."
His television judging credits run longer:
- "Legendary"
- "America's Next Top Model"
- "Project Runway"
- "RuPaul's Drag Race"
So he knows cameras. Acting is a different trade, and Roach knows it. When a reporter suggested his A-list clientele could offer guidance, he cracked: "I've also worked with some of the greatest singers of all time, but that doesn't mean I'm going to try to sing."
Measured irony, self-applied. The man styles his own deflections.
What did Priyanka Chopra Jonas say?
Fellow Imagemaker honoree Priyanka Chopra Jonas — sometimes a Roach client — used the same carpet to talk about "Judgment Day," the upcoming Nicholas Stoller comedy for Amazon MGM Studios. The film reunites her with her "Baywatch" co-star Zac Efron and also stars Will Ferrell, Regina Hall and Fortune Feimster.
"I had a blast. I went in there to learn and had a great time," Jonas said. "I'm just sitting there and watching everyone."
The premise: Efron plays a newly released prison inmate who takes a TV courtroom judge, plus his cast and crew, hostage. The ensemble also includes Michael Peña, Billy Eichner, Jimmy Tatro, Heidi Gardner, Bobby Cannavale and Bill Camp.
Did she break on set?
The obvious question, asked and answered. "No, no, I'm a professional," Jonas quipped. Then the asterisks arrived: "Maybe twice. Once with Will, for sure and once with Regina. She said something and I was just done. Fortune said something too and I was really trying hard."
She framed the experience as a study in craft. "I'm a girl that comes from drama, so to be surrounded by all of these amazing comedians and actors who are so easy with comedy, it was so cool to witness."
What happens next?
Roach's acting career currently waits on one variable: a director who sees something for him. Given that he has already logged two cameos and four judging chairs, the leap from red carpet to call sheet looks less like a pivot and more like a short walk — provided somebody hands him a role he can't refuse.
