Lego will release its first-ever musical feature film, "Lego Friends: Heartlake the Musical," on Netflix and the company's YouTube channel on Oct. 16. The 90-minute production, directed by Paul Becker and produced by Kenny Ortega, adapts the toymaker's Lego Friends line.

The film reaches for the template of Disney Channel's "High School Musical."

Who is behind the camera?

Ortega wrote the story and produces alongside a roster that includes Jill Wilfert, Hannah Brinkman, Robert Fewkes, Vicky Kjær Jensen, Hanah Draper, Michael McKenna, Keith Malone, and Ryan Christians. His prior work spans "High School Musical" producing duties and direction on "Newsies" and "Hocus Pocus."

The screenplay comes from Kirk R. Thatcher and Jeremy Adams. Final Pixel produced the film, which was shot entirely in the U.K.

Who leads the cast?

Jada Langley stars as Daisy, a young girl who turns to toy bricks as she adjusts to a new school in a new country. Langley most recently played Joyce in the touring production of the Kinks musical "Sunny Afternoon."

Gino Ochello, currently leading "The Karate Kid: The Musical" in London's West End, also stars. His ongoing London run underlines the production's reliance on British theater talent.

The supporting cast:

  • Gracie McGonigal as Autumn
  • Danita Walcott-Nichols as Aliya
  • Hannah Gracie as Paisley
  • Hamish Skeoch as Olly
  • Manuel Jenoure as Zac
  • Angelina Li as Liann
  • Darcy Jacobs as Candi
  • Meesha Garbett as Nova
  • Siubhan Harrison as Daisy's mother
  • Kevin N Golding as Old Man Heart
  • Taylor Sullivan as Kyle
  • Ian Virgo as Daisy's father

What's the plot?

Daisy's discovery of a mysterious key transports her to Heartlake City, where she befriends a group of new companions. Together, they work to save a vital local landmark through a series of song-and-dance sequences.

The narrative structure borrows from the Disney Channel musical template: a teenager navigates an unfamiliar social world, finds her voice through performance, and unites her community around a shared cause.

What does the release signal?

The Oct. 16 debut lands on two platforms simultaneously, Netflix and Lego's YouTube channel. The dual distribution targets both paid subscribers and the toy brand's existing online audience.

The release will test whether a feature-length musical built around Lego's Friends toy line can compete in a streaming market saturated with franchise extensions. Ortega's involvement anchors the project in proven family-musical territory. The cast's West End credentials supply the production values that distinguish theatrical adaptations from straight-to-streaming product.
