Lin-Manuel Miranda will return to Broadway this spring with "Warriors," a decade after "Hamilton" became a pop culture sensation, and he has now announced the eleven actors who will lead the cast.

Jaci Calderon, Aneesa Folds, Amber Gray, Julia Harriman, Sasha Hutchings, Gizel Jiménez, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Kenita R. Miller, Sasha Allen, Casey Likes and Donald Webber Jr. will star. Several of them worked on earlier iterations of "Warriors" or appeared in Miranda's previous shows, "Hamilton" and "In the Heights." Additional cast members will be announced later.

The production begins previews at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on March 9, ahead of an April 8 opening night.

What is 'Warriors' about?

Miranda wrote the book, music and lyrics with co-writer Eisa Davis. The show adapts Sol Yurick's 1965 novel and Paramount's 1979 action film, following a fictional New York gang framed for the murder of a respected gang leader as it fights its way from the Bronx back to home turf in Coney Island.

The 1979 film is not a musical, though it includes songs by Barry De Vorzon, Joe Walsh and Arnold McCuller. The stage version originated as a 2024 concept album, executive produced by Nas and produced by Mike Elizondo. That recording featured the voices of Ms. Lauryn Hill, Busta Rhymes, Marc Anthony, Billy Porter, Ghostface Killah, RZA, Colman Domingo, Cam'ron and Kim Dracula.

Who is making it?

Jenny Koons directs. Andy Blankenbuehler, a Tony winner who worked with Miranda on "In the Heights" and "Hamilton," co-directs and choreographs.

The producers are Thomas Kail ("Hamilton"), Miranda and his father, Luis A. Miranda, Jr., and Jeffrey Seller.

The creative team also includes:

  • Scenic design: David Korins
  • Costume design: Dede Ayite
  • Lighting design: Natasha Katz
  • Sound design: Jason Crystal
  • Projection design: Hana S. Kim
  • Fight direction: Drew Leary
  • Music supervision: Kurt Crowley
  • Orchestrations: Kurt Crowley, Mike Elizondo and Scott Wasserman

What does the show sound like?

Miranda and Davis described the project in a statement: "We're having the time of our lives making 'Warriors.' It's a rollercoaster like the Coney Island Cyclone, with all the action of Walter Hill's classic film."

They added: "It's a New York story to the bone, with music steeped in all the genres that were born and revolutionized here, from hip-hop to salsa to ska and metal and everything in between. It's an edge-of-your-seat journey from Brooklyn to the Bronx and back again. It's a dream of a more peaceful city where we all come home alive. This is the sound of something being born."

What does this change for Broadway?

The production reunites the core team behind Miranda's two biggest hits. Blankenbuehler's choreography and Kail's direction shaped "Hamilton" and "In the Heights," and Seller produced both. Whether "Warriors" can convert a star-heavy concept album into a stage phenomenon will become clear when previews begin at the Lunt-Fontanne on March 9, with the official opening set for April 8.
