Madonna and Charli XCX Team Up for "Danceteria Afterhours"

Madonna and Charli XCX have released their first collaborative track, "Danceteria Afterhours." The song is a rework of "Danceteria," a track from Madonna's forthcoming Confessions II, and arrives as the latest in a string of addenda to that album.

Andrew Watt, Cirkut, Stuart Price, and Madonna herself co-produced the new version. It drops just days before Madonna returns to the VMAs.

"Danceteria Afterhours" is Madonna's second collaboration in as many months. In August she enlisted Kylie Minogue for "Love Sensation (Afterhours Mix)," continuing a pattern of high-profile guest additions to the Confessions II project.

The pairing with Charli XCX follows what read as an apparent side-eye from Madonna earlier this year. In May, she wrote on social media: "If your Dance floor feels dead, maybe you're playing the wrong music." The comment seemed aimed at Charli, whose Music, Fashion, Film single "Rock Music" contains the much-quoted line: "I think the dancefloor is dead/So now we're making rock music."

Rather than escalate, the two artists have turned the exchange into a record. Whether "Danceteria Afterhours" signals further joint material from Madonna and Charli XCX — or more additions to Confessions II before its release — remains to be seen.
