Matt Berninger, frontman of The National, has released a new EP, Type It Up. The five-track collection includes covers of New Order's "Blue Monday" and the Velvet Underground's "Who Loves the Sun," the latter featuring Rosanne Cash.

The EP follows last year's solo album Get Sunk. It gathers Berninger's recent single "Martini Me Fatso" and a new song, "Ask for Water," which arrives with a video by Chris Sgroi.

Berninger says the record grew directly out of touring. "These songs came out of the momentum and energy of the Get Sunk tour," he said in a statement. "I was changing lyrics and forms night after night, and we were getting real time feedback from audiences and social media comments."

That feedback loop produced one concrete change. On the title track, originally titled "Black Letter Font," listeners kept mishearing the lyric "That would look good in a black letter font" as "I would look good in a black leather thong." Berninger responded by rewriting the chorus. "I'm more of a black linen suit guy," he said.

Both covers on the EP already had standalone releases this year. "Blue Monday" came out as an Amazon Music Original track, while "Who Loves the Sun" debuted on the Australian television show Sunny Nights.

The vinyl-only acoustic version of "Martini Me Fatso," recorded live in Australia, gives the physical edition an exclusive bonus track — a signal that Berninger intends the EP as a keepsake for listeners who followed the Get Sunk tour, not just a between-albums stopgap.
