Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler Start Filming 'Miami Vice '85'

Universal's "Miami Vice '85" has begun filming, and the studio has released a first look at Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in character as Ricardo Tubbs and Sonny Crockett. The reboot reaches theaters on May 19, 2028.

Jordan takes the role of Tubbs, played by Philip Michael Thomas in the original series; Butler plays Crockett, the part that made Don Johnson a star. The characters are police detectives working undercover in Miami, Florida. The original "Miami Vice" ran from 1984 to 1989 on NBC.

Joseph Kosinski directs. He recently helmed "F1" and "Top Gun: Maverick."

Who joins Jordan and Butler on screen?

The cast list runs deep:

• Alden Ehrenreich
• Whitney Peak

What will the reboot be about?

According to the studio's description, the film will explore "the glamour and corruption of mid-80's Miami" and is "inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking."

Dan Gilroy wrote the script, based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich for the television series. Eric Warren Singer wrote an earlier draft of the screenplay. Dylan Clark and Kosinski produce. Executive VP of production development Sara Scott and creative executive of production development Christina Hoffrogge oversee the project for Universal.

Where do the two leads go next?

Jordan, who won best actor last year for "Sinners," will next star in "The Thomas Crown Affair" opposite Adria Arjona, a film he also directed. Butler's next film is A24's "Enemies," co-starring Jeremy Allen White.

With production now underway and a release date locked more than three years out, Universal is positioning "Miami Vice '85" as a major event entry on the 2028 calendar.
