Miley Cyrus performed her first live concert in four years at the Hollywood Bowl on Friday, and by Sunday she was defending it from the stage. She told the audience she had almost refused to come out at all.
The target was online commentary. "I don't know if any of you heard that somebody was doing commentary to get clickbait on their video talking about my show on Friday night, but I'm a lot of things and we're not even going to entertain that," Cyrus said in fan-captured video from Sunday's show.
The criticism focused on one specific thing: Cyrus wasn't singing every word of every song. That included her biggest hits, "Party in the USA" and "Flowers." For a pop comeback after a four-year live hiatus, some viewers read the gaps between vocal lines as a lack of commitment.
Cyrus answered that charge mid-song on Sunday. While singing "Bass Persuades," the lead single from her most recent album, she interjected: "Oh, I forgot I'm supposed to sing every fucking line!"
Why the criticism stung
Cyrus told the Sunday crowd that performing "does not not come as natural as it once did." That admission reframes the debate. What looked to some like disengagement may be a singer recalibrating after four years away from the stage.
She also rejected the framing of the two Hollywood Bowl dates as some kind of test run. "This is not an experiment of you. This is an experience for me. And you all make the experience possible," she said.
The emotional core of her monologue came at the end. Cyrus revealed she had decided to skip Sunday's show entirely before walking out for the song "Orbit."
"Before I came out for 'Orbit,' I already told myself I wasn't going to come on stage, I was going to run away," she said. "But never would I leave you all sitting in these seats, unfulfilled from a show."
She closed with her strongest statement of the night: "I can take a lot, but one thing I will not stand is any question about where my heart is when I'm on the stage. I am fully present."
What does this change for her comeback?
In practical terms, not much — the second show went ahead, and Cyrus addressed the criticism directly rather than through a publicist. What it does signal is the pressure around her return to live performance. A single viral commentary video nearly derailed the second date of a comeback four years in the making.
It also marks a shift in how Cyrus is handling scrutiny. Earlier in the monologue she said, "I've never heard that I don't put my heart into something." She clearly considers that reputation worth defending publicly, on stage, in her own words — profanity included.
The Hollywood Bowl shows now stand as both a comeback and a statement about it.
