Miley has released the video for "Different Religion," the new single from her 10th studio album, Bass Persuades, which just hit Number One on the Billboard 200 — her first album to top the chart since Bangerz in 2013.
Mert Alas directed the cinematic visual. It opens on a desert road flanked by mountains, where a car speeds through. The driver is later revealed to be Miley herself.
"I got my own god," she declares while caressing her face, bathed in red light. "He drives a fast car."
Later she appears in black and white, rocking a guitar. "I've got my own god/My god's a hot boy," she sings — and a hot boy, model Charlie Knepper, duly joins her for the joy ride.
What does the chorus say?
"I want to be saved by a different religion/I crave to believe him," goes the chorus. "We don't need forgiveness/I want to be saved by a different religion."
Model/Actriz's Cole Haden and Miley take turns on other verses, while different models mouth along to the words on screen. Together they sing: "In the rear view/Every passing exit/My faith is his hard body, cracked leather."
How did critics receive the track?
Rolling Stone's review of Bass Persuades described "Different Religion" as "a gothic pop song about a man who drives a fast car and makes loud noise. 'I've got my own god,' Cyrus sings. 'My god's a hot boy.' If her love is anything like the battering sound of the track, it must be intense, even if its lyrics betray the feeling."
The video arrives as Bass Persuades marks a commercial milestone for the singer: her first Number One album in more than a decade. With Alas behind the camera and Haden on vocals, "Different Religion" positions the album's gothic-pop centerpiece for its next run through the pop conversation.
