Nashville Symphony Cancels 2026-27 Season Amid Financial Struggles

The Nashville Symphony Orchestra has canceled its 2026-27 season following reports of financial struggles.

The orchestra's board made the decision and announced it in a public statement. "Our Board of Directors recently made the difficult decision to suspend the 2026-27 season effective October 18 to address financial challenges and establish a solid foundation for the future," the company said.

The suspension takes effect the day after October 17, a date the statement singles out. "While after October 17 it will be some time before our orchestra returns to the stage, we are grateful for our community's enduring support, and we remain confident that the Nashville Symphony's future will be brighter than ever," the statement continued.

The move comes as the organization marks eight decades of performance. "For 80 years, audiences across Middle Tennessee have supported the Nashville Symphony in our mission to inspire and engage our community with the power of orchestral music," the statement said. "Our story doesn't end here."

The company pointed audiences to a letter from President & CEO Mark Cantrell posted on its website, which addresses the circumstances behind the suspension.

Not every event at the orchestra's venue is off the calendar. The Symphony Ball and the Symphony Fashion Show will proceed as planned, along with weddings, hall rentals, and several other musical performances.

As it attempts to rebuild, the orchestra is asking supporters for donations to help fund its future. It is also inviting audiences to share and post a favorite Nashville Symphony memory and photo — a campaign that leans on the goodwill the organization says it has already received. "Thank you for the outpouring of goodwill and generosity you have offered in this moment," the statement said.

The cancellation lands at a precarious moment in the ensemble's artistic leadership. The Nashville Symphony recently named Leonard Slatkin as its music director. Slatkin was set to hold the position for three years, through the 2028-29 season — a tenure now overshadowed by the suspension of the season that was to fall within it.

The orchestra has offered no timeline for its return to the stage beyond its acknowledgment that the hiatus will last "some time." Whether Slatkin's planned tenure proceeds as announced will be among the questions the organization faces as it works to restore its financial footing.
