Netflix has signed six actors as series regulars for its adaptation of Hannah Grace's novel "Icebreaker," bringing Gabriel Tierney, Auliʻi Cravalho, Peter Berry, Chaneil Kular, Devin Craig and Aidan Shaw aboard the YA drama, Variety has learned exclusively.

The six join previously announced leads Daisy Jelley and Connor Simos. The show's logline sets the central collision: "She's the transfer gunning for Olympic gold. He's the campus star chasing the NHL."

Who is joining the cast?

Casting is split between a Disney veteran and a working ensemble. Tierney, known for "Rivals" and "Enola Holmes 2," will play Aaron. Cravalho, the voice of Disney's "Moana," takes the role of Lola. Berry makes his onscreen debut as Robbie. Kular, whose credits span "Best of the Best," "Sex Education," and "The Accused," plays JJ. Craig, of "Sex Lives of College Girls" and "Maize," is cast as Henry. Shaw, seen in "We Were Liars" and "Heated Rivalry," rounds out the group as Russ.

A subsidiary plotline from the logline completes the premise: "But when an accident forces their teams to share one rink, Anastasia Allen (Jelley) and Nate Hawkins (Simos) collide—and discipline gives way to obsession, because the only thing more dangerous than wanting to win is wanting each other."

Who is shaping the series?

Amanda Lasher and Jade Halley Bartlett are attached to write and executive produce. Bartlett is credited as creator; Lasher will serve as showrunner. Alex Cooper, Matt Kaplan, and Mina Lefevre executive produce via Unwell Productions, with Grace also executive producing. The arrangement pairs a writer-producer credited with creating the adaptation (Bartlett) and an experienced showrunner (Lasher) at the center of a multi-producer pipeline.

Why does the source material carry weight?

"Icebreaker" sits at the center of a wave of ice-set romance adaptations. The novel is the first of three in Grace's Maple Hills series and is set at the fictional University of California, Maple Hills. It debuted in 2022 with a wide release in 2023, spent 70 consecutive weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, and has sold nearly 5 million copies worldwide. Those figures give the project a measurable readership base before a frame has been shot.

Where does the show sit in the streaming moment?

The timing is deliberate. "Heated Rivalry," about two pro hockey players engaged in a secret love affair, took off after its late 2025 debut. Amazon has also released "Off Campus," whose first season follows a star college hockey player and his relationship with a music student at the same school. Both series are based on book franchises — a parallel that places "Icebreaker" inside a definable audience corridor rather than an open field.

The casting expansion pairs a Disney-tested draw (Cravalho) with a working ensemble (Tierney, Kular, Craig, Shaw) and one debutant (Berry). With Lasher and Bartlett developing the scripts and a 5 million-copy readership banked behind it, the series will test whether the skating-rink romance has more runway — or whether the subgenre is now contending with saturation.
