“Paddington the Musical” will remain at the Savoy Theatre through June 25, 2028, following seven wins at the 2026 Olivier Awards, Variety reports.
According to Variety, the seven wins tied the record. The musical also collected nine WhatsOnStage Awards, matching the ceremony’s most-wins record, and the Critics’ Circle Award for best new musical.
Variety says the extension arrives as the production approaches its first anniversary at the Savoy. Its summary was blunt: the show is “sticking around London a little longer.” The extension gives its technically elaborate central performance time to continue with a new cast.
What did the production win?
Variety records that the Olivier Awards named it “best new musical.” Sheppard won best director, while James Hameed and Arti Shah shared best actor in a musical for jointly portraying Paddington.
The awards cover the production, its director and its unusual lead performance. The results give the extension a firm factual basis.
How does Paddington move onstage?
Variety reports that the musical’s elaborate staging of Paddington combines a full-body bear costume with remote puppetry. Original performers Shah and Hameed spent three years developing the character through workshops.
Shah physically embodied Paddington onstage. Hameed supplied his voice and remotely controlled his facial expressions. The arrangement resembles a two-person control desk, with one performer on the body and another on the voice and face.
Who carries the bear now?
A new West End cast began performances on Oct. 28, Variety reports. Abbie Purvis and Hassan Taj now alternate as Paddington’s onstage performers, with Sonny Monaghan providing his voice and remote puppetry.
The rest of the new cast includes Haydn Oakley and Charlotte Wakefield as Mr. and Mrs. Brown, Cassidy Janson as Millicent Clyde and Linzi Hateley as Mrs. Bird. Paddington remains a divided role. Its basic mechanics do not change.
What is the musical about?
Variety traces the show to Michael Bond’s 1958 book A Bear Called Paddington and StudioCanal’s 2014 film. The marmalade-loving Peruvian bear arrives in London and finds a home with the Brown family.
A mysterious villain sets her sights on the new houseguest, upending the family’s lives. Variety credits McFly singer Tom Fletcher with the music and lyrics, Jessica Swale with the book and Luke Sheppard with direction. Sheppard’s credits include & Juliet.
Where does the musical travel next?
Variety reports that Broadway previews begin March 30, 2027, at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, before the official opening on April 18, 2027. Another production will open at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre in September 2027.
Variety identifies Sonia Friedman Productions, StudioCanal and Eliza Lumley Productions as producers, acting on behalf of Universal Music UK. Tickets for the extended London run are on sale now. The best availability begins in summer 2027.
The Olivier and WhatsOnStage results give the extension a clear rationale. Broadway’s April 18, 2027 opening and Sydney’s September production provide the next evidence. They will show whether a bear divided between body, voice and remote facial control can hold attention beyond London.
