Patrick Stewart died on Wednesday at age 86, and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has led the tributes to the actor who played Professor Charles Xavier across nine films since 2000's "X-Men."

Stewart's final on-screen appearance is already in the can. He is set to reprise the role of Professor X in "Avengers: Doomsday," scheduled to reach theaters on Dec. 18. That film now stands as an unplanned farewell.

What did Kevin Feige say?

Feige, producer and president of Marvel Studios, released a statement after news of the death broke.

"I'll never forget the first time I saw Sir Patrick Stewart on the set of the first X-Men," Feige said. "After years of knowing him as the inimitable Captain Picard, I was in awe — and he turned out to be everything I had seen on screen and more: brilliant, charming, warm, generous, with a quiet strength and gravitas."

He did not stop at the professional record.

"Away from the cameras, he was even more remarkable, with a wonderfully sharp sense of humor," Feige continued. "It was a true privilege to know him and to work with him. His legacy lives on not only in decades of extraordinary work, but in the many, many people he mentored. He will be deeply missed."

Note what Feige chose to stress: mentorship, not box office. The claim that Stewart shaped "many, many people" is his alone, and no names accompany it — but the emphasis fits an actor who worked across stage, television and franchise cinema for decades.

How extensive was Stewart's Professor X run?

The record is concrete:

  • Nine films as Professor Charles Xavier, beginning with "X-Men" in 2000
  • The original Fox trilogy: "X-Men," "X2: X-Men United" and "X-Men: The Last Stand"
  • "X-Men: Days of Future Past" (2014)
  • "Logan" (2017)
  • Marvel Studios' "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" (2022)
  • "Avengers: Doomsday," due Dec. 18, his final screen appearance

That is a 25-year span in a single role, crossing two studios — Fox first, then Marvel Studios proper.

Feige's statement also credits the actor with a second identity entirely: Captain Picard of "Star Trek," the part he held before Marvel ever cast him.

What does Marvel's own statement say?

Marvel Studios released a separate memorial statement praising Stewart for bringing Charles Xavier to life with "extraordinary grace, intelligence, and humanity" and for "defining the character for generations of fans."

"He was a singular talent, a generous collaborator, and a true gentleman," the statement reads. "Our hearts go out to his wife Sunny, his children, his friends, and the countless fans around the world whose lives he touched with his art."

The studio's phrasing is warm, but it is also precise: "defining the character for generations" is a claim few actors in franchise cinema can carry. Stewart held the role for nearly a quarter century, and no successor has yet been named.

Neither statement addresses what becomes of Xavier in "Avengers: Doomsday" or beyond. What is certain is the release date: Dec. 18, when audiences will see Stewart's Professor X one last time.
