Phil Wang Returns with Uh Oh: Moustaches, Gentrification and Millennial Ageing

Phil Wang brought his new standup show, Uh Oh, to Soho Theatre Walthamstow in London, offering what the Guardian's review describes as "older and wiser musings and mockery" on moustaches, Gail's bakeries and a stated distaste for cyclists.

A lot has changed since Wang's last tour. He has, the review notes, "mastered the art of growing a moustache, for one." He has bought a house in a "cool" part of London, where he lives with his houseplants. And, in the comedian's own framing of the moment, "the world has tipped considerably to the right." The show asks what all this means for a performer the review positions as "now officially in the territory of an ageing millennial."

The answer, largely, is more of the observational comedy that built Wang's reputation. The set includes his established routines on being both British and Chinese, along with newer material on gentrification — the review singles out his desire for a Gail's bakery in Peckham — and his stated resentment at finding his own views "becoming progressively less progressive."

The tone remains gently mocking, aimed mainly at himself but at others too, with varying results. The Guardian's critic finds a routine about cyclists — who, in Wang's framing, are "apparently asking for a death wish by venturing out on a 2D vehicle" — "more snarky than he may have intended." By contrast, his David Bowie impression earns higher praise: the review suggests it "could use a stage all of its own."

The show runs on tour until 23 May.
