Programme

  1. Philippa Northeast replaces Quintessa Swindell in Netflix's seven-part series 'Feral.'
  2. The series adapts Shirley Conran's 1987 novel 'Savages' and shoots in Australia.
  3. The cast includes Jessica Gunning, Michelle Dockery, Genevieve O'Reilly and Dolly de Leon.
  4. Hera Pictures produces, with Jude Mack writing and Emma Freeman directing.

Quintessa Swindell has exited the upcoming Netflix series "Feral," Variety has learned, and "My Brilliant Career" star Philippa Northeast will play the role instead. No reason was given for the casting change.

The swap lands just as the show is about to start shooting in Australia. It's a late switch for a series with its full principal cast already announced — and it puts Northeast, an Australian actor best known for the 1979 classic's recent reinvention lineage, into one of the show's central roles.

What is 'Feral' about?

The series adapts Shirley Conran's 1987 novel "Savages." The premise: four women on a work trip accompanying their husbands must learn to survive in the jungle after the journey takes an unexpected and dangerous turn.

Netflix's logline for the comedic drama fills out the picture: "Four very different women accompany their mining executive husbands on a corporate holiday to a beautiful but lethal tropical island. When the men's shady deals land them all in danger, the women must learn to survive the jungle – and each other. Can they put aside their differences, self-doubts and vanities to stay alive?"

The seven-part adaptation stars:

  • Jessica Gunning ("Baby Reindeer") as Annie
  • Michelle Dockery ("Downton Abbey") as Julia
  • Genevieve O'Reilly as Silvana
  • Dolly de Leon ("Triangle of Sadness") as Elena
  • Philippa Northeast as Suzy

Suzy, the character Northeast now inherits, is described in the book as "sensuous" and "spoiled." That gives the actor a sharply drawn figure to work with — and a contrast to the survival arc the story forces on all four women.

Who is making it?

Hera Pictures, the producer behind "Hamnet," is adapting the book. Jude Mack writes the screenplay; Emma Freeman directs.

Liza Marshall, founder of Hera Pictures, addressed the project when the show was first announced. "We're delighted to be working with the incredibly talented Jude Mack to bring Shirley Conran's best-selling novel to the screen," she said.

Marshall also hinted at the show's tone — one where the women aren't simply victims of circumstance. "The extraordinary female characters at the heart of the show will be pushed to extremes, behave deliciously badly and have a whole lot of fun along the way," she said. "Emma Freeman is the perfect director to take us on the ride, and Netflix have wholeheartedly embraced the scale and ambition of the show."

What does this change for the series?

In practical terms, not much structurally. Suzy remains in the story; the production timeline holds, with shooting in Australia about to begin. What changes is performance chemistry — Northeast joins an ensemble that pairs Gunning, fresh off "Baby Reindeer," with Dockery and the internationally rising de Leon.

For Northeast, it's a significant step onto a global streaming platform. For Swindell, the exit closes a chapter without explanation — and, per Variety, without any stated next move.

The series now moves into production with its recast role filled, and Netflix has yet to announce a release date.
