Programme

  1. Prime Video has a revenue run rate in the tens of billions of dollars and is now profitable, CEO Andy Jassy said.
  2. Q3 total video and music expense was $5.9 billion, up about 7% year over year; nine-month content spending rose 20% to $18.8 billion.
  3. Season 5 of Thursday Night Football averaged 17.7 million viewers through six games, up 16% from last season's average, per Nielsen.
  4. Reacher Season 4 drew 66 million global viewers in its first 28 days.
  5. Carrie, which premiered Oct. 7, generated more than 2.1 billion minutes viewed through Oct. 22, per Luminate.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy told analysts on the company's earnings call that Prime Video is now profitable "in its own right," with a revenue run rate in the tens of billions of dollars. The disclosure came on a call overshadowed by a missed Q3 earnings estimate, slowing ad revenue growth and investor unease over Amazon's spending on AI infrastructure, which weighed on free cash flow.

Jassy, who took over as Amazon's CEO in 2021, pointed to what he called momentum across the streaming service's slate.

"Prime Video has emerged as a significant business with a revenue run rate in the tens of billions of dollars, now profitable in its own right."

He named the hit shows driving that performance: "Carrie," "The Summer I Turned Pretty," "The Boys," "Off Campus," "Reacher" and "Fallout."

What is Amazon spending on content?

Amazon's 10-Q filing for the third quarter shows total video and music expense of $5.9 billion, up about 7% from the year-earlier period. For the first nine months of 2026, content spending rose about 20% to $18.8 billion.

Beyond scripted series, Jassy highlighted "breakout movies" including Amazon MGM Studios' "Project Hail Mary" and what he called "compelling live sports, including 'Thursday Night Football,' off to its best start ever in 2026, NBA on Prime, NASCAR, the Masters and UEFA Champions League soccer."

How big are the audiences?

The audience figures in Amazon's earnings release give the profitability claim its backing:

  • The fifth season of "Thursday Night Football" on Prime Video averaged 17.7 million viewers through six games, per Nielsen — a 16% increase over last year's full-season average.
  • The second season of NBA on Prime drew more than 2 million U.S. viewers for its season-opening doubleheader, more than twice last year's full-season average, according to Nielsen.
  • Season 4 of "Reacher" attracted 66 million viewers globally in its first 28 days.

The newest series in the lineup, "Carrie," premiered Oct. 7. The show, starring Summer H. Howell as Carrie White, generated more than 2.1 billion minutes viewed through Oct. 22, according to data from Luminate.

What does this change for streaming?

The answer matters beyond Amazon. Prime Video has long sat inside a broader subscription bundle, its costs folded into Amazon's consolidated accounts. Jassy's statement separates the service out as a self-sustaining business at a scale — tens of billions in annual revenue — that few streaming platforms can claim, and it does so while Amazon's overall results disappointed Wall Street.

The question for rivals is whether a platform built on a retail bundle, a film studio and live sports rights can keep compounding those audiences while raising content spending another 20% year to date. With "Thursday Night Football" posting its best start ever and NBA viewership doubling, Amazon has signalled where the money will keep going.
