Rebecca Allen, former head of Decca, is leaving Universal Music after 27 years with the company. The 53-year-old executive, known across the industry as Becky, said in a farewell note that a string of corporate titles had taken her "further and further away from the music and artists she believes in," as Slippedisc reported.

Allen had spent more than half her life at Universal. Her departure removes one of the major label group's most respected figures — and one of its few senior executives with a producer's grounding.

Who is Rebecca Allen?

Allen comes from a family that sang in choirs and worked behind the glass wall of recording studios. That background matters. As Slippedisc notes, she knows better than most label executives "what it takes to make a record, and then to make it succeed."

She rose through Universal's UK operations to lead Decca, the historic London label (founded 1929) best known for classical recordings. Later executive roles moved her further from day-to-day music-making — the distance she now cites as a factor in her exit.

What does her farewell say?

Allen's note, addressed "to my friends, colleagues and Universal family," frames the exit as her own choice of timing.

"After 27 years at Universal Music, this chapter is coming to an end."

"I'll be stepping away from my current role and, while I'll remain connected to UMG in an advisory capacity, the time feels right for me to turn the page and make space for a new chapter."

She calls her 27 years "an enormous privilege" and credits artists as "the driving force behind every decision I've made."

The note closes with a short credo for colleagues:

  • "Be kind."
  • "Be respectful."
  • "Be brave."
  • "Continue to push creative boundaries."
  • "Make space for brilliant people to be brilliant."
  • "Fight for the ideas you believe in."
  • "And always put the music and the artist at the heart of everything."

She signs off: "It's been quite a ride. Love to you all. Becky xxx."

What changes at Universal?

The immediate operational impact looks limited. Allen stays connected to Universal Music Group in an advisory capacity, so her institutional knowledge isn't walking out the door entirely.

The bigger signal is cultural. A senior executive leaving because leadership roles pulled her away from artists is a pointed comment on how large label groups structure their top jobs. Allen also says she will "stay closely attached to music making" — language that suggests a next chapter in production or artist work rather than another corporate post.

No successor has been named, and Universal has not commented beyond the farewell note. Whether her exit prompts Decca-adjant leadership changes, or a return to hands-on music work for Allen herself, should become clear in the coming months.
