Reese Witherspoon has cut roughly 30 employees from Hello Sunshine — about 50% of the company's staff — just weeks after buying the production banner back from Candle Media. Variety first reported the layoffs, citing multiple sources. Representatives for Hello Sunshine declined to comment.

The buyback closed earlier this month. Witherspoon reacquired the company with backing from the French conglomerate Mediawan, reportedly paying a fraction of the $900 million that Candle Media, the Blackstone-backed label, paid for its controlling stake in 2021. The terms of the new deal were not disclosed.

What changes at Hello Sunshine?

The restructuring narrows the company's focus. According to Variety's sources, Hello Sunshine will now concentrate on:

  • Film and television projects
  • The Reese's Book Club brand

The direct-to-consumer division is being gutted in the process. The cuts amount to one in every two jobs at the company.

A history of layoffs under Candle Media

The staff reduction continues a pattern. Under Candle Media's ownership, Hello Sunshine saw at least four rounds of layoffs in the past two years alone. Those reductions hit the unscripted department and Sunnie, the company's Gen Z-oriented lifestyle brand, particularly hard.

Candle Media shuttered Hello Sunshine's kids and animation unit in 2023. In 2024, it consolidated its live-action division, including Hello Sunshine's, into Candle Studios. Hello Sunshine CEO Sarah Harden led Candle Studios until she stepped down a year later.

In plain terms: the company Witherspoon just retook had already been shrinking for two consecutive years before this week's cuts.

What did Witherspoon say about the deal?

When the acquisition was announced, Witherspoon struck an optimistic note. "The best is still ahead," she wrote in a statement.

"Mediawan has built a global, independent studio by putting creators first. That has always been my vision for Hello Sunshine," her statement said. "I'm investing alongside Mediawan and joining Pierre-Antoine Capton and his teams because this is the perfect home for this new media landscape. It's also a homecoming. Peter Chernin and Jesse Jacobs believed in Hello Sunshine from day one. I'm deeply proud of what our incredible team has built, and grateful to Blackstone and Candle Media for their partnership and unwavering support."

What comes next?

The layoffs signal a leaner operation built around two pillars: screen productions and the book club brand that has driven much of the company's cultural reach. Whether a halved staff can deliver on Witherspoon's promise that "the best is still ahead" will define the company's next chapter under Mediawan.
