  1. Rita Wilson will reprise Evie Michaels in HBO's 'Girls' revival, she told People.
  2. The revival is a limited five-episode series, greenlit by HBO earlier this month.
  3. Production begins in 2027, a decade after the Season 6 finale of the original run.
  4. All four core cast members return: Dunham, Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke and Zosia Mamet, plus Andrew Rannells.
  5. The original series ran from 2012 to 2017, created by Lena Dunham.

Rita Wilson says she is returning to HBO's "Girls" revival as Evie Michaels, Marnie Michaels' eccentric mother. Wilson, 67, first joined the series in Season 2 and made guest appearances through its full run.

Asked by People whether she will appear in the new iteration, Wilson said: "That is what I'm hearing, so I don't think Lena would be lying about that." She described herself as "so excited" about the comeback.

What has HBO confirmed so far?

HBO greenlit the revival earlier this month. The limited series will run five episodes, with production beginning in 2027 — a full decade after the Season 6 finale aired in 2017. Lena Dunham created the original dramedy, which ran from 2012 to 2017 and followed a group of friends through the dysfunction of their 20s in New York City.

Dunham returns as creator, showrunner and star, reprising Hannah Horvath. All four core cast members are back:

  • Dunham as Hannah Horvath
  • Allison Williams as Marnie Michaels
  • Jemima Kirke as Jessa Johansson
  • Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna Shapiro
  • Andrew Rannells as Elijah Krantz

Judd Apatow returns as executive producer through Apatow Productions, alongside Dunham, Ilene S. Landress and Michael P. Cohen of Dunham's Good Thing Going banner. Williams, Kirke, Mamet and Rannells serve as co-executive producers.

Why does Wilson want to come back?

Wilson's answer was emphatic. "Oh my gosh, yes. I mean, Lena is one of the most talented people I've ever worked with. I would do anything for her," she told People. "I would bend over backward. And then I love Allison Williams who, you know, I was lucky enough to play her mom."

She added: "I know Lena's gotta be cooking up something very good."

The original series spanned six seasons over five years. The revival compresses that format into a five-episode run — one episode for each year the show originally aired.

What does this mean for the revival?

Wilson's casting signals that the revival will reach beyond the four core friends into the show's extended family of recurring characters. Her mother role anchored some of Marnie's most memorable storylines in the original run.

With production not starting until 2027, audiences face a wait of roughly two years before the revival reaches screens.
