Focus Features released a second trailer for Robert Eggers' "Werwulf" on the day of the Harvest Moon. The studio also launched an alternate reality game timed to the next three full moons. The film opens in theaters on Friday, December 25.

"Werwulf" is Eggers' fifth feature, following "The Witch," "The Lighthouse," "The Northman" and "Nosferatu." The lycanthropy saga is set in an English village in the 13th century. Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as a man who undergoes terrifying transformations into a werewolf each full moon.

Plot details remain scarce. The official synopsis reads: "Focus Features presents 'Werwulf,' a harrowing tale of devotion, damnation, and the devil within."

What does the new trailer show?

Focus Features previously screened footage of "Werwulf" at CinemaCon before releasing the film's first trailer. The second trailer, the studio says, offers a closer look at the film.

Eggers fans can expect:

  • Stunning production design
  • Period-appropriate language
  • Performances from his trusted ensemble, including Willem Dafoe and Lily Rose-Depp

The director wrote the script with frequent collaborator Sjón. Chris Columbus, Eleanor Columbus, Bernard Bellew, Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Garrett Bird serve as producers.

How does the full-moon game work?

The alternate reality game goes live on the day of the full moon for each of the next three months, beginning with the Harvest Moon. Each full moon launches a 24-hour online scavenger hunt. Fans must search for and decipher a hidden code on the film's digital platforms and enter it before time runs out.

Players can sign up at DevourethAllMankynde.com.

What comes after 'Werwulf'?

Focus Features has already set plans to reteam with Eggers on his upcoming adaptation of Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet." That project gives the studio and the director a second collaboration beyond the Christmas Day release.

The full-mounth game architecture ties marketing directly to the film's lunar premise. Expect the three scavenger hunts to build momentum through late autumn toward the December 25 opening.
