Programme

  1. Rodrigo Teixeira receives the inaugural Árbol de la Vida Visionary Award at GLAFF on Nov. 6.
  2. Wagner Moura presents the honor ahead of a screening of James Gray's 'Paper Tiger'.
  3. RT Features films have earned nine Oscar nominations and six Golden Globe nominations.
  4. Teixeira becomes first mentor of the GLAFF Co-Production Lab with FICG.
  5. The 16th GLAFF runs Nov. 5-7 in Los Angeles, opening with Diego Luna's 'Ashes'.

Two-time Oscar-nominated producer Rodrigo Teixeira will receive the inaugural Árbol de la Vida Visionary Award at the GuadaLAjara Film Festival (GLAFF) on Nov. 6. Oscar-nominated actor Wagner Moura will present the honor ahead of a screening of James Gray's "Paper Tiger," which Teixeira produced.

The award, according to the festival, recognizes individuals who have made a lasting impact on cinema and strengthened ties between Latin America and the international film industry. For once, the word "visionary" comes with receipts.

Teixeira will also take a working role at the festival. He becomes the first mentor of the GLAFF Co-Production Lab, a new industry initiative developed with the Guadalajara International Film Festival (FICG) to foster co-productions between Mexico and the United States.

"Rodrigo Teixeira has built a career defined by bold storytelling and a true commitment to artists across the border," said Ximena Urrutia, executive director of GLAFF. "As inaugural mentor of our New Mexico-U.S. co-production lab, he will help emerging filmmakers turn ambitious cross-border projects into lasting partnerships."

Why does the résumé back the award?

For more than two decades, Teixeira has bridged Latin American and global filmmaking through his production company RT Features. The credits read like a festival programmer's wish list: "Call Me by Your Name," "The Lighthouse," "The Witch" and "Invisible Life." Think of RT Features as a bridge with a backend in São Paulo and a red carpet in Hollywood.

The numbers hold up. Teixeira earned best picture nominations for "Call Me by Your Name" and Walter Salles' "I'm Still Here," the latter of which won the Oscar for international feature. Films from his banner have collected nine Oscar nominations and six Golden Globe nominations in total.

"Paper Tiger" marks the third collaboration between Teixeira and Gray, following "Ad Astra" and "Armageddon Time." Three films with one auteur director is a commitment, not a fluke.

What else is on the GLAFF program?

The 16th edition of GLAFF runs Nov. 5-7 in Los Angeles. Diego Luna's "Ashes" opens the festival. Eddie Sánchez's "Mexicanamerican" closes it. The three-day window packs in an award, a screening and the launch of a co-production scheme.

The Visionary Award gives GLAFF a marquee honor in its sixteenth year. The Co-Production Lab, with Teixeira as its first mentor, signals the festival's ambition to be a dealmaking hub between Mexican and U.S. producers rather than just a weekend of screenings.
