A jury at Southwark Crown Court in London found Russell Brand guilty on Thursday of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. He was acquitted on two further counts of rape and one count of attempted indecent assault.

Brand, 51, stood impassively in the glass defendants' box at the back of the courtroom as the foreman read the verdicts. Judge Joel Bennathan denied him bail and told the court he would impose "significant custodial time" at sentencing on Monday.

What does the verdict cover?

The unanimous decisions came after roughly eight and a half hours of jury deliberation. They concern episodes that prosecutors said involved six women and took place between 1999 and 2009 — the decade when Brand was rising from comedian and MTV presenter to mainstream film stardom.

Under British sentencing guidelines for rape, the maximum penalty is life imprisonment. A more typical prison term falls between four and 19 years. The judge's comment about "significant custodial time" signals he intends to sentence at the serious end of that range, though the exact figure won't be known until Monday.

Are more legal problems coming?

Probably, yes. A spokeswoman for London's police said in an emailed statement after the verdicts that officers had questioned Brand about two further accusations of rape and had submitted files to prosecutors. That means the Crown Prosecution Service will decide whether to bring a second round of charges.

Brand has also faced a civil action in the United States connected to his past sexual behavior. His legal team did not immediately respond to a request for comment after the verdicts.

Why this case matters beyond the courtroom

Brand's trajectory is part of the story. He first found fame as a comedy and acting star before reinventing himself in recent years as a popular conspiracy-minded YouTuber, building a large online following while criminal proceedings moved through the courts.

The verdicts make him one of the most prominent figures convicted since British prosecutors began pursuing historical sexual offence cases at scale. Six complainants testified about events stretching back as far as 1999 — evidence juries were once reluctant to act on.

Monday's sentencing will settle the immediate question of how long Brand stays behind bars. The pending prosecutorial decision on the two additional rape accusations, and any U.S. civil proceedings, will decide how much longer this story runs.
