Programme

  1. The 2027 Virtuosos Award honors eight actors: Coon, di Girolamo, Eleazar, Firstman, Ippolito, Jackson, Navarrette and O'Flynn.
  2. The honorees will receive the award and discuss their work on Feb. 7, 2027.
  3. The 42nd Santa Barbara International Film Festival runs Feb. 3-13.
  4. John Malkovich receives the Outstanding Performer of the Year Award; Andrew Garfield receives the Maltin Modern Master Award.

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival has named eight recipients of its 2027 Virtuosos Award, with Carrie Coon, Mariana di Girolamo, Rosalind Eleazar, Jordan Firstman, Anthony Ippolito, Jaafar Jackson, Inde Navarrette and Kate O'Flynn all set to be honored on Feb. 7.

The award recognizes performers whose work has placed them, in the festival's words, at the center of the conversation around the year's most noteworthy cinematic performances. Translation: these are the names awards-season handicappers already argue about.

The honorees will attend the 42nd annual festival event to receive the award and discuss their work in person.

Who said what?

Turner Classic Movies host and SBIFF moderator Dave Karger didn't hold back on the class of 2027.

"This year's Virtuosos are a powerhouse group from the most talked-about films of the season. I think it's especially fitting that so many of them are international performers, and I can't wait to help welcome them all to Santa Barbara," Karger said.

International is accurate. The list spans American, British and Chilean talent, with di Girolamo — the lead of Pablo Larraín's earlier "Ema" — among the most internationally rooted of the group.

Which films earned the honor?

The festival tied each award to a specific performance:

  • Carrie Coon — "The Liberation"
  • Mariana di Girolamo — "Wild Horse Nine"
  • Rosalind Eleazar — "Misty Green"
  • Jordan Firstman — "Club Kid"
  • Anthony Ippolito — "I Play Rocky"
  • Jaafar Jackson — "Michael"
  • Inde Navarrette — "Obsession"
  • Kate O'Flynn — "Tender Loving Care"

Jackson's turn in "Michael," the Michael Jackson biopic in which he plays his own uncle, is the attention magnet here — casting that practically guarantees chatter. Firstman, known for "Rotting in the Sun," brings his provocateur energy to "Club Kid." Coon, meanwhile, adds another laurel to a run that has made her one of the most reliably praised actors working.

What's the track record?

The Virtuosos dinner has a habit of landing early on future stars. Honorees over the last six years include Jacob Elordi, Chase Infiniti, Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Andrew Scott, Austin Butler, Renate Reinsve, Kieran Culkin and Harris Dickinson, among others. That's not a list of unknowns. That's a list of people who were unknown shortly before appearing on it.

The tribute's predictive record explains why the Feb. 7 session — part award, part moderated career conversation — has become a fixture for industry watchers gauging which performances have real momentum.

What else does the festival have planned?

The 42nd Santa Barbara International Film Festival runs Feb. 3 to 13. Official events — screenings, filmmaker Q&As, industry panels and celebrity tributes — will take place across the city, including the Arlington Theatre and the recently opened SBIFF Film Center.

Two major tributes are already on the books: John Malkovich receives the Outstanding Performer of the Year Award, and Andrew Garfield takes the Maltin Modern Master Award.

With eight Virtuosos, two headline tributes and a citywide program, Santa Barbara is again positioning itself as the awards season's comfortable way station between the holiday releases and the March ceremonies.
