Chilean filmmaker Sebastián Lelio, 52, died Friday at his home in Santiago. He directed A Fantastic Woman, the 2018 Oscar winner for best foreign language film. The report did not provide a calendar date for that Friday or a diagnosis.

His partner, actress Amalia Kassai, posted on Instagram, saying his death was “due to health reasons.” According to Chilean outlet El Mercurio Online, Kassai contacted police after he was found at his home in the Las Condes district of Santiago.

The report gave no autopsy result, account of when he was found or fuller timeline, so “health reasons” remained the only stated indication of cause.

Kassai’s words were: “We are going through a very painful time, and his memory will remain with us forever. He was a wonderful person who contributed to Chilean culture during important moments in its history.”

A statement signed by the Lelio Kassai family and the Campos Watt family asked for respect for their privacy and consideration during the difficult period.

A Fantastic Woman starred Daniela Vega as a trans woman implicated in the accidental death of her older boyfriend. The film won the Oscar for best foreign language film in 2018 and the Independent Spirit Award for best international film. The report said the film’s emphasis on gender identity helped lead to reforms for trans identification in Chile.

That connection needs qualification. The report names no law, reform date, government agency or measure of public effect. Its language links the film to policy change, but the account supplies no evidence for weighing the film’s influence against other forces. The awards establish the film’s recognition, not the scale of its policy impact.

Lelio was born in Argentina and moved to Chile at age 2. He started his career with La Sagrada Familia, followed by Navidad and The Year of the Tiger. The report gave no birth date or release dates for those early films, so it offers only an outline of that period.

His other films included:

  • The Wonder.
  • Gloria Bell, an English-language remake of Gloria, which had won numerous awards. It starred Julianne Moore and John Turturro and followed a free-spirited woman looking for love in Los Angeles dance clubs.
  • Disobedience, his 2017 English-language film starring Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams. Its story follows a woman who returns to an Orthodox community and reunites with a childhood friend.

Most recently, Lelio directed The Wave, a musical inspired by feminist mobilizations in Chile. The report supplies no cast, release date or production detail, so the work’s scale and reception remain unstated. It also said Lelio had been working on Chilean Poet, based on the novel by Alejandro Zambra.

What happens to Chilean Poet now?

The report said Lelio had been working on the adaptation before his death. The immediate practical question is whether the project will continue toward release. The report gives no schedule, cast, financing or plan for the film after his death. It does not say that the project has been cancelled, so any claim that it has either continued or been abandoned would exceed the available information.

The confirmed facts are Lelio’s death and the unresolved status of Chilean Poet; the family asked for privacy. The next verifiable development would be an announcement on the adaptation, not speculation about his legacy.
