'SNL' Season 52 Opens With Trump and Mamdani as Unlikely BFFs

"Saturday Night Live" opened its 52nd season with a cold open built around an improbable political friendship: President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Ramy Youssef joined the cast as Mamdani, receiving James Austin Johnson's Trump in the mayor's office. Johnson's Trump explained the dynamic plainly: "For some reason that no one can figure out, I really, really like you."

The two leaders ran through the week's news. They discussed the storm hitting the East Coast, the Knicks' championship, the U.N. meeting currently taking place in New York City, and Trump's recent hosting of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The scene shifted when Natalie Harp arrived. Ashley Padilla played Trump's much-discussed executive assistant, channeling Nikki, the stalker character from the hit series "Obsession." Harp announced her devotion with a cinematic flourish: despite the storm, "I ran here from D.C., 'Weapons' style."

Johnson's Trump sized her up with a one-liner. "She's like the girl from 'Obsession' but blond," he quipped.

Harp closed the sketch by pulling Mamdani aside for a quiet threat: "If you hurt him, I will end you."

The premiere episode continues with Jalen Brunson as host and Katseye as musical guest. The night also marks the debut of two new featured players, Saidah Belo-Osagie and Grace Reiter, joining the ensemble for Season 52.

With Trump and Mamdani now established as a recurring comic pairing, the show has signaled the political territory it plans to mine in the season ahead.
