SpongeBob SquarePants' hour-long Christmas special "Merry Christmas, Mr. Plankton" premieres Nov. 27 at 5 p.m. ET/PT on Nickelodeon, with a same-day release on Paramount+. Lewis Black guest stars as Santa.

The official logline lays out the plot: "In this festive episode, SpongeBob, Mr. Krabs and an unlikely group of friends must team up to save Christmas after Plankton takes over the North Pole." A new trailer for the special has been released alongside the date announcement.

The main voice cast returns in full: Tom Kenny (SpongeBob), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), Mr. Lawrence (Plankton), Jill Talley and Carolyn Lawrence. Black, the stand-up comedian and actor known for his ranting stage persona, joins them as Santa.

What follows the special?

Nickelodeon isn't stopping at one hour of holiday programming. A new episode of "The Patrick Star Show" premieres immediately after the special, at 6 p.m. ET/PT on Nov. 27.

The episode, titled "Snowbound! A Star Family Christmas," finds Patrick and his family snowed in at home, passing the time by sharing Christmas stories. It's a deliberate programming block: the SpongeBob special leads viewers straight into the spinoff.

Why this franchise keeps working

SpongeBob remains one of the most valuable pieces of intellectual property under the Paramount umbrella. The mothership series, created by Stephen Hillenburg, debuted in 1999 and has run for more than two decades.

The numbers explain the durability. The franchise has been seen in more than 180 countries and translated into over 30 languages. It spans TV shows, movies, video games, merchandise and a Broadway musical.

Recent franchise entries include:

  • The theatrical release "The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants"
  • The prequel animated series "Kamp Koral"
  • The spinoff "The Patrick Star Show"
  • Movies centered on Sandy Cheeks and Plankton

That last item matters here. A Plankton-focused film already exists in the franchise's recent output, and now the character gets the Christmas spotlight again — this time as the villain who seizes the North Pole.

What does this change for viewers?

For families, it consolidates holiday viewing in one evening: an hour-long SpongeBob special, then a Patrick Star Christmas episode, back to back on the same night. For Paramount+, it puts a marquee franchise title on the platform on the Thanksgiving-adjacent date, when streaming usage typically peaks.

The Nov. 27 slot also signals how Nickelodeon treats SpongeBob holidays programming — as an event rather than a single episode. With Black's Santa and a takeover plot, the special leans on the franchise's proven formula: an ensemble caper built around Plankton's latest scheme.

Whether "Merry Christmas, Mr. Plankton" becomes a recurring holiday staple, as earlier SpongeBob Christmas content has, will show in next year's slate.
